Martin Luther King Junior Celebrations


In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 19, the Children’s Museum in Houston hosts a mock civil rights rally and other events from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

13th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition

Jan. 16, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Christ, 500 Clay Street, Houston

The annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition features fourth and fifth grade students from 18 Houston-area schools presnting original five-minute speeches on the topic of “If Dr. King were alive today, what do you think he would say about current events?”

Students are judged on their delivery, stage presence, decorum, content interpretation and memorization.


The Salvation Army Choir performs at 9:45 a.m. and speeches are from 10 to 11:45 a.m.

8th Annual MLK High School Battle of the Bands

Jan. 17, Del Mar Stadium

The 8th Annual MLK High School Battle of the Bands starts at 6 p.m. This event features more than 20 nationally acclaimed marching bands from across the country.

The 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band from Cherry Point, N.C., will be a part of the opening ceremonies and perform an exhibition at the close of the event.

3rd Annual MLK Day Parade

Jan. 17, downtown Houston

The MLK Parade Foundation hosts the 3rd Annual MLK Day Parade Saturday in downtown beginning at noon. The parade’s theme “The Color of Unity” will emphasize cultural diversity.

The 2009 parade will be lead by Crenshaw High School Marching Band from Los Angeles, Calif. and the Wossman High School Marching Band from Monroe, La.

Co-grand marshals are Raven Symone formerly of the Cosby Show and Grammy winner Chamillionaire.

Martin Luther King celebration with Robert Ray

Jan. 18, 9 a.m. and 11:12 a.m. at First Methodist Houston Westchase, 10570 Westpark Drive at the Sam Houston Tollway

Composer, conductor and musician Robert J. Ray will perform the 40-minute Gospel Mass during both the 9 and 11:12 a.m. Worship Services, to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King on Sunday, Jan. 18, at First Methodist Houston Westchase at 10570 Westpark Drive at the Sam Houston Tollway.

Ray's Gospel Mass was composed in 1978 when Ray was a liturgy team member of the National Office of Black Catholics and the need grew from their workshops.

Ray is professor of music and conductor of the University of Missouri-St. Louis Community Chorus.

21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration

Jan. 19, noon, St. Paul Church in The Woodlands, 2200 Lake Woodlands Drive

After a year hiatus, the annual celebration returns in 2009 featuring Tim Melton of KTRK-TV Channel 13 as master of ceremonies.

The event features a special choir and message from Roche Coleman, pastor of St. Paul Church in The Woodlands. Highlights of the King celebration also include the Drum Major award, given annually in recognition to an outstanding individual or business in Montgomery County. Winners of essay and poster contests for students in the Conroe Independent School District will also be announced.

Celebrating a leader and a legend at the Children’s Museum

Jan. 19, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

To pay tribute to Dr. King, the Children’s Museum hosts a mock civil rights rally with the famous words of Dr. King and inspirational music at noon, dream portraits from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.; and a magic show at 2 p.m.

Other events include an MLK timeline, Dream Wall, Family Seal, Civil Rights Heroes and Tops and Bottoms, be a veggie scientist like George Washington Carver and identify which parts of plants we do and don’t eat.

15th Annual MLK Grande Parade

Jan. 19, downtown Houston, 10 a.m.

The parade’s theme is “The Color of Unity,” and features more than 30 marching bands from across the nation.

The 2009 MLK Grande Parade will be lead by the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Marching Band from Cherry Point, N.C. and the Chinese National Marching Band from the southern United States.

Honorees include Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee and Houston City Council member Peter Brown. Co-marshals are businessman / philanthropist Douglas Horn and publisher and motivational speaker Anthony Taylor.

The parade is expected to attract more than 300,000 spectators.
