What looked to be a solid matchup ended up being a blow out as Westfield High School beat Spring 64-40 at home Friday night for the team’s first district win. But this was anything but a lopsided game early on.

There were four lead changes in the first quarter, and the Lions were up 22-19 going into the second, largely due to four Nevin Johnson three-pointers, who lead the Lions with 20 points.

Then, as if a whole other team took the court, the Lions couldn’t get anything to fall.

Westfield outscored Spring 22-3 in the second quarter and had a demanding 41-25 led at the end of the half.

Mike Brown was on fire, leading Westfield with 27 points, with 12 coming in the second, not to mention his two morale-killing dunks. Mark Brooks followed in Mustang scoring with 13 points.

The scoring turnaround was made possible by Westfield stiffening up on defense. Mustang defenders got in the guards’ faces, which lead to bad shot selections, and inside penetration by Spring became a rarity.

Now both teams are 1-2 in District 13-5A. Westfield goes to Klein Oak next and then on Friday hosts a Klein Collins team that is 2-1 in district play. Spring has Klein Collins and Klein coming up.
