Westfield girls 3-0 in the district after beating Dekaney

The Lady Mustangs let Dekaney hang with them for the first quarter then went on run after run to finish 64-34 at home Friday night and move to 3-0 in the district.

Dekaney came out with the fire needed for an upset, junior guard Erika Bell had two steals early in the first, and the Lady Wildcats looked good as they led – for a brief moment that is. The one and only time Dekaney was on top it was 6-5, just under the first five minutes of the game.

Westfield’s experience was too much for the first-year varsity Dekaney squad as the all-senior triple threat of Gevenia Carter, Simone Hopes and Rashelle Thomas, scored at will. Carter and Hopes had 15 points each while Thomas scored 11, including 3 three-pointers.

Dekaney’s scoring was led by Alexis Durley with 14 points and Lexy Harris with 12. It wasn’t that they were outsized or outmuscled by the Lady Mustangs. It was more a matter of being outsmarted.

The Lady Mustangs seemed to always be in the right place at the right time on their way to winning the all-important board battle with 23 defensive and 17 offensive rebounds.

Westfield was up 40-19 at the half. Then, went back to work in the third where the team pulled ahead 54-26 to begin the fourth quarter and worked in its bench in preparation for the Tomball game coming up on Tues., Jan 6.
