Nonprofit organizations are one of the hardest hit sectors by the recession. But a little known way to raise money has been keeping the Barbara Bush Library’s shelves stocked for sometime and should keep on doing so, well into the future.
In total, more than $20,000 has been raised through Kroger’s “Neighbor to Neighbor” program and the Randalls “Good Neighbor” program for the library over the past decade.
“We always need more money to buy books,” said Nancy Agafitei, branch librarian. “Books are our lifeblood and especially in our children’s area where books wear out so easily because we circulate them so often.”
The Barbara Bush Library Friends receive a percentage of the money participating customers spend on their groceries. Anyone can sign up and it’s so simple to help donate that it is easy to forget your doing it.
All you have to do is swipe your Kroger Plus Card or Randalls Remarkable Card each time you shop.
It doesn’t cost the person using the card anything, all of the money comes from the stores themselves.
The current “Neighbor to Neighbor” program runs until April 20, 2009. Even if you have been a part of this program in the past, you must re-register to continue participating by presenting a form with the Barbara Bush Library Friends’ barcode (1-0000-80373) to the cashier upon checkout. You can pick up the form at the library, or print it out by going to www.krogerneighbortoneighbor.com.
After the cashier has scanned your Kroger Plus Card you will be enrolled for the current year in the Neighbor to Neighbor program. Every time you shop at Kroger and use your card, the store will contribute a percentage of your eligible purchases to the Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor fund.
Once a card is scanned with the barcode, it will be active for the remainder of the program year.
The Randalls’ program operates similarly. You can designate an organization to receive your donations at any time by completing a Remarkable application form at the courtesy booth. Fill in the top portion and the “Good Neighbor” program section, indicating what account number to link on you card.
The Good Neighbor number for the Barbara Bush Library Friends is 1362. If you already have a card, ask the cashier to link it to that number. Re-registration is not needed for the Randalls’ program.
Of course there are more traditional ways to donate money to the library. People can get their name on the ‘Donor Wall’ by donating $500 or more.
There is also a ‘Book Mural’ in the children’s area where for $100 people can donate a book in honor of someone and get that person’s name put on the book.
