A number of Missouri City residents celebrated the holidays by setting off fireworks in area neighborhoods across the city.

Missouri City police responded to 17 reports of fireworks violations and shots fired in area subdivisions over the weekend.

Police responded to calls regarding fireworks violations at 1314 River Rock Drive, 2719 Glen Echo Lane, 2730 Everhart Terrace Drive, 3518 Glenn Lakes Lane and a residence on Hammerwood Drive.

Missouri City also received a number of calls from residents reporting what sounded like “shots fired,” several of which were determined to be fireworks-related, said Sgt. Pete Paske, based on preliminary police reports.

Officers did not locate any of the individuals involved in the reported incidents.

According to the police sergeant, the department experiences an increase in fireworks-related calls during this time of year.

“It usually happens around the holidays,” Paske said.

The Missouri City police officer anticipates a similar, if not greater, number of calls for the upcoming New Year’s holiday, based on past history.

Fireworks are prohibited within the city limits according to city ordinance and is considered a public nuisance, a fineable offense.
