In their final tuneup before district play begins Friday, The Woodlands Lady Highlanders fell to hot-shooting Homeschool Christian Youth Association 71-54 at home Tuesday night.

The Lady Highlanders jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game, but the Lady Warriors countered with a run of 11 points.

After its cold start, HCYA nailed 3-of-3 three-pointers in the first quarter and finished the half shooting 55 percent from the floor.

“There are a lot of good things that we did tonight, but keeping up with their great shooters was not one of them,” The Woodlands coach Dana Bruton said.

HCYA was led by Frazier, who scored 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, but the Lady Warriors also had three other players score in double figures.

After staying within striking distance of HCYA in the first half, 29 percent shooting in the second half undid the Lady Highlanders.

“You’ve got to be able to finish against good teams like that and you’ve got to do a good job defensively on the other end,” Bruton said. “We didn’t have that combination when we needed it.”

HCYA took a 26-20 lead late in the first quarter on Emily Frazier’s three-pointer and Kristen Huff’s three-point play. The Lady Warriors extended that margin by scoring the first seven points of the second for a 33-22 lead.

The Lady Highlanders (14-10) closed within five points of HCYA at the half. But after they had narrowed the gap to 41-39 midway through the third quarter, HCYA finished the period on an 8-2 spurt as The Woodlands turned the ball over five times in its final eight possessions.

The Lady Warriors then extended what was a seven-point lead at the 7:41 mark of the fourth quarter by sinking 11-of-13 free throws the rest of the way.

Amanda Anderson led The Woodlands with 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals. Madison McKinstrey chipped in 10 points, including two three-pointers, while Sarah Seefeldt added nine points and Molly Missimer had eight.

The Lady Highlanders host Lufkin in their District 14-5A opener Friday night.

“We knew HCYA had great penetrators and great shooters,” Bruton said. “We know Lufkin has great penetrators and a lot of speed.

“We felt like they were good preparation for Lufkin.”
