Lady Deer move to 4-0 after holiday break

The Deer Park Lady Deer hosted the Pasadena Memorial Lady Mavericks after the holiday break in what would prove to be a barnburner of a game.

Senior floor general Katie Whitaker looked to help maintain the Lady Deer high level of play from the previous district wins before the break.

Whitaker put 17 points on the board for the Lady Deer as the game on Carlisle Court went down to the wire. Ashley De La Garza, who has upped her points per game ratio to nearly six points per game, would come through during crunch time for the Lady Deer.

Coach Teresa White’s girls were down the entire game to a tough Memorial team, but definitely not out as they were forced to foul in the waning moments of the fourth quarter.

Jessica Hardcastle got the Lady Deer to within two points with just seven seconds to go in the game after she quickly knocked down a two point bucket and two free throws.

The girls brought a fierce trap to the Lady Mavericks on their very next play and managed to force a steal which found its way into the hands of De La Garza who toed the line and knocked down a huge three-point shot to propel the Lady Deer to a one-point win as the buzzer sounded.

It was a tremendous win for the Lady Deer as they moved to 3-0 in district in play.

Leading contributors in the win were: Katie Whitaker- 17 points, Jessica Hardcastle- 9 points, Ashley De La Garza- 6 points, Mercedez Santana- 4 points, Diana Hejtmanek- 4 points, Leah McCollum- 4 points, Hayle Lovell- 2 points, and Shelbi Roussa- 2 points.

The girls carried over the momentum to the following game against South Houston High School and absolutely dismantled the Lady Trojans by a score of 59-24.

The duo of Whitaker (18 points) and De La Garza (10 points) — who are quickly establishing themselves as a tandem to be reckoned with in the 22-5A District — combined for 28 of the Lady Deer’s total points as they moved to a well respected 4-0 record in district play.

It is quite clear that Coach White’s girls are coming into form and they are putting themselves in perfect position for a showdown for the District 22-5A crown.

They will be on the road to do battle with cross-town rival La Porte High School this Friday at 7 p.m. then Coach White and her girls will be headed to Dobie High School for a duel with the Lady Longhorns on Jan. 13.

Coach White had positive things to say about the two solid wins after the holiday break.

“It was our first couple of games back from the holiday break and our girls played great,” she said. “It was two great wins for us and what I am most proud of is that they didn’t quit in the first game against Memorial. When the odds were against them my girls stepped up!”

The Lady Deer basketball team is stepping up indeed as Katie Whitaker — who has scored an impressive 80 points in the first four district games — has teamed up with Ashley De La Garza to lead a very potent and battle-tested Lady Deer squad into district competition.
