Pearland ISD celebrates School Board Recognition Month
Published: 01.08.09
In honor of School Board Recognition Month in January, Pearland Independent School District is joining other districts across the state to thank these dedicated community volunteers for their commitment to public schools.
More than 7,000 men and women across Texas devote countless hours and energy to govern school districts, impacting the face of education today and tomorrow.
School Board Recognition Month, which builds awareness and understanding of the role school boards play in the community, recognizes trustees’ year-round commitment to advance public schools and maintain citizen control of educational decisions.
“Preparing today’s students to be productive citizens and leaders is a tremendous task. As elected officials, our school board members act as the voice of the community, serving first and foremost in the best interest of our children,” Dr. Bonny Cain, Pearland ISD superintendent, said. “They develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues that affect the entire community and the lives of individual students.”
The Pearland ISD Board of Trustees bears responsibility and oversight for the district’s budget, 22 campuses and more than 17,500 students and 2,000 employees.
The school board members serving Pearland ISD include Vice President Dr. Glenn Garrison (12.5 years in office, nonconsecutive terms), Secretary Adele Brennan (2.5 years in office), Florida Dotson (2.5 years in office), Dean Hamil (0.5 years in office), Suzy Roberts (1.5 years in office) and Lillian Smith (16.5 years in office).
