Rayburn opens Silver with loss; Deer starts with win

ALVIN – Too little of a scoring punch Monday night cost Sam Rayburn a chance for the 22nd annual Alvin Holiday Classic Silver Division championship.

Fort Bend Austin held Rayburn to just five first-half field goals en route to nabbing a 44-38 victory at Alvin Community College.

Meanwhile, at Alvin High School Deer Park won its opening game of the Silver Division, knocking off Clear Springs High School 61-51.

Sam Rayburn will play the loser of the Angleton-Manvel game today at noon back at Alvin Community College.

Deer Park will meet Alief Taylor in one of two semifinal games this afternoon at 1:30. The two will see who earns a berth to the Silver Division title game at Manvel High School.

Sam Rayburn lost to the Bulldogs despite Josh Martinez supplying a great deal of the offense, 21 of the 38 points to be exact. Fort Bend Austin owned a 39-29 advantage and appeared to have the game in the bag. But suddenly Martinez scored five quick points and was doing the job on defense, He completed a three-point play at the foul line then at the other end of the floor he drew the foul, giving the Texans the ball back. Martinez then scored back at the other end, cutting the deficit to 39-34 with still 2:15 to play.

Sensing trouble on the scoreboard, Fort Bend Austin then made Sam Rayburn come out and foul as the Bulldogs went to a stall game. Brandon Fagan, who finished with a team-high 12 points, went to the foul line to inflate the lead back to seven. The lead went to nine on its next possession, thanks to a Christopher Manuel bucket; essentially ending Rayburn’s bid at the victory.

Deer Park spotted Clear Springs a 15-12 lead after one period before grabbing the momentum with a big 19-10 second-period advantage, sparking the club to the nice win.

For head coach Louie Means and his club, it’s the second win this season over Clear Springs. Back on Dec. 2 at Cotton Watkins Gym, the Deer won 71-69.

Monday night, it was Tyler Aston scoring 18 points and Adrian Morales tacking on 13 and Darian Banks finishing with 10.

Deer Park was sent to the Silver Division after falling to Cinco Ranch Saturday night 57-54 in overtime, the team’s final pool game. This time, another slow first period cost the Deer, although barely. The Cougars owned a 16-5 lead after the opening eight minutes, before rallying to force the OT.

Clint Ray scored 16 points in the losing cause, while Joseph Nedbalek and Aston each had 12.

Deer Park’s start in the tournament on Saturday began with an 85-75 win over Sharpstown. The Apollos were only down 45-38 early in the third period, but that’s when Deer Park clinched the victory with a 15-0 run. Back-to-back possessions saw Clint Ray drain 3-point buckets from the left side, highlighting the run. Nedbalek tacked on an old-fashioned three-point play with 4:50 to play in the third, suddenly creating a big 56-38 advantage. Chase Hallene finished the impressive run with back-to-back scores of his own.
