Local teams dominate All-District selections
By MIKE TENNEY
Strake Jesuit, Memorial, and Stratford were three of the four football teams in District 18-5A to make the Region III-5A playoff bracket.
So it would make sense those three schools held the majority of All-District player selections when the first and second teams were announced last week.
Strake Jesuit head coach Ron Counter was named the coach of the year in the district after guiding the Crusaders to an 8-1 record and a perfect 6-0 district championship run. The Crusaders were eliminated by Madison in the second round of the Region III, Division II playoffs this past season.
Each of the schools also had a player selected for specialty honors.
Memorial senior Michael Ratterree, who is headed to Rice University on a baseball scholarship, was named the defensive player of the year. Ratterree was a defensive back and he returned two punts for touchdowns this year.
Strake Jesuit senior quarterback James Scott, who has committed to SMU, was the district offensive player of the year.
Scott completed 112 passes for 1,647 yards in 10 games for the Crusaders. He also threw 22 touchdown passes and just five interceptions and led the team in rushing with 504 yards.
Stratford junior Derwin Ambrose was named the first-team return specialist. He led the district in return yardage in both punts and kickoffs.
Strake Jesuit had six players on the first-team offense while Memorial had four and Stratford had one.
Besides Scott, Strake Jesuit wide receivers Kellan Belanger and Klein Kubiak were also first teamers along with senior tackle Eric Baars, kicker Alex Wilkins and kicker High Stewart.
Belanger and Kubiak gave the Crusaders a strong passing attack this past season. Belanger had 34 catches for 549 yards and 11 touchdowns. Kubiak, son of Texans head coach Gary Kubiak, had 23 catches and six touchdowns.
Memorial placed four seniors on the first team, including two offensive linemen.
Tackle Jacob Figueroa and guard Royal Mosher along with senior running back Nolan Miller and wide receiver Daniel Neumann were all-district selections.
Miller, sharing time with others, rushed for 752 yards on 127 carries and six touchdowns. Neumann had a league-high 34 receptions for 752 yards and seven touchdown catches.
Stratford senior running back Rodney Anderson, who led his team in rushing, was the only Spartan first-team offensive choice.
Strake Jesuit had five All-District players on defense while Stratford had three and Memorial had two.
Defensive tackle Jo Jo Williams, end Wes Williams, linebacker Garrett Staudt and defensive backs Chase Mayo and Bayo Adesomo were the district elite chosen from Strake Jesuit. All are seniors.
End Terrance Lloyd, linebacker Carson Brown and punter Jerry Young are the trio of Spartans on the first-team list.
For Memorial, besides Ratterree, fellow defensive back Tripp Ballard, who led the team in tackles, was the other Mustang chosen.
All three teams also had a slew of second team selections on both sides of the ball.
Senior quarterback Davis Miller, senior wide receiver DeāMario Thibodeaux, junior center Trey Gregory, and kicker Kevin Soto represented Memorial on the second team offense.
Junior guard Michael Gibson and junior wide receiver Brett Benninger for Stratford and Strake Jesuit offensive lineman John Hohlt were also second teamers.
Memorial had five players on the second team all-district defense, including senior linebackers Nathan Miller and Jared Carameros and junior Mike Williams. End Daniel Cho and tackle Will Fenton were also mentioned.
Senior defensive back Patrick Blizzard and sophomore end Hugh Stewart were also recognized on defense along with Stratford defensive tackle LaCorey Pace.
