RAD classes help to increase safety for the new year

Encouraging residents to be more proactive and safe when out on the streets, self-defense classes have been on the rise throughout the year for men, children and especially women.
As the new year is beginning, there is no better time to join a self-defense class or program to ensure safety this year.
The Eagle Springs Safety Advisory Committee is hosting its second Rape Aggression Defense Education class for women Jan. 12 through Jan. 14.
In a partnership with Harris County Precinct 4, the free class for women is based on awareness, risk reduction, avoidance strategies, situational dynamics and basic physical self-defense principles.
“We organized the first RAD class in October and we wanted to have another class for women in the new year and ensure the safety of women in our community,” said Jennifer Shuck, secretary for the Eagle Springs Safety Advisory Committee.
“I participated in the class this past fall and it was amazing how much you learned and how they teach you skills that you can actually use in real-life situations.”
RAD classes offer four different scenarios where the women work with police officers to learn aggressive stances, how to protect oneself at ATMs or if approached by an aggressive stranger.
Near the end of the course, they also offer hands-on experience for the women in the course who have to get out of being in a restrictive position safely.
The Eagle Springs SAC will also provide water, refreshments and invite anyone in any community to come join and learn self-defense.
“After the class, I felt much more prepared for anything that could happen,” Shuck said. “We wanted to hold a RAD class for our community to empower women because everyone needs to be protected and on-guard for anything that could happen.”
The RAD class is open for women, especially teens and young adults, and will provide women with the knowledge to make an educated decision about resistance.
