THE WOODLANDS — The Woodlands’ state-ranked soccer teams started the season off on the right foot Thursday with victories in their respective tournaments.

“It’s a great way to start,” Woodlands coach Hans Kleinschmidt said. “Cy Woods is good, they could be the best team in their district. They’re fast, they’re physical, they play a good game. For us to put two on them early and keep them out of the net, I was really happy.”
Keaton Laden, the Highlanders’ senior keeper, was rarely tested but did make a diving one-handed stop to preserve a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.
The Highlanders play Mayde Creek today at 1 p.m. Mayde Creek beat Baytown Lee 4-1 in Thursday’s other Pool A game .

“Being focused is definitely something we’re going to have to work on,” Woodlands coach Dina Graves said. “You’re going to have games where you have the lead, you’re going to have games where you have to come from behind, where it’s tied. They have to make sure they keep their focus and make sure they stay that way. I think they did a nice job of that today.”
Four minutes into the second half, Cook’s header deflected off an Episcopal defender and into the net to make the score 4-0. She scored her fourth goal a minute later, Olivia Kintigh scored in the 48th minute to make it 6-0, Mary Lippa scored in the 59th minute and Kelsey Missimer scored with two minutes to go.

“It’s very positive, not only for the win, but we’re getting our chemistry down,” College Park coach Todd Underwood said. “We have a lot of new players playing together for the first time. That’s our main goal for this tournament actually — not just to come out looking for wins, but to get our chemistry down and get our style of play set.”
