Continuing education is important to continuing growth

With the start of the New Year an invaluable tool for development is continuing education. Continuing Education can provide skills for personal growth and development.
Continuing Education at Lone Star College-CyFair provides professional development and personal enrichment opportunities for individuals who live or work in north Harris County.
“Since LSC-CyFair opened its doors less than six years ago, we have experienced an influx of adult students enrolling into our Continuing Education programs in order to attain a skill so they could advance in their current jobs and earn more money or have been considering a transition into a more successful career,” said Abdul Tamimi, Dean of Instructional and Organizational Development, Lone Star College-CyFair.
As part of the Lone Star College -CyFair commitment to the concept of lifelong learning, continuing Education programming includes courses and seminars in the evenings, on weekends, and during daytime hours that are convenient for adults who cannot attend classes during more traditional time periods. In addition, many continuing education is offered via LSC Online, via the Internet.
“Continuing Education courses often lead to career advancement, certification, licensure, new career endeavors or simply the personal satisfaction of learning a new hobby or skill,” said Feleccia Moore-Davis, Ph.D., Vice President for Student Learning, Lone Star College-CyFair. “All of our courses are eligible for Continuing Education Units and are offered throughout North Harris County at all LSCS locations”
LSC CF offers a comprehensive selection of technical, career, academic and leisure classes, career training, retraining, professional development , and personal enrichment classes. Including classes that begin every week and are offered during the day, evening, and weekend to suit anyone’s schedule.
“The advantage is that community colleges have the faculty, flexibility and the tools to quickly develop a workforce program through CE and provide training in a short period of time so they could promptly join the workforce,” Tamimi said. “As our national and local economies continue to decline and more people lose their jobs, the trend is to go back to a local community college for retraining. Thus, we are expecting a significant growth in student enrollment in the upcoming months especially in our CE programs and courses.”
“Our goal is to continually anticipate the needs of a rapidly changing community and implement innovative programs/technologies to facilitate the pursuits of life-long learning,” Moore-Davis said. “We also offer specialized programs such as CCDEL (PALS) and Massage Therapy. Also some short-accelerated programs that will help students attain a skill and a job in less than 3 months such as CNA, then they can return to take Medication Aide or Phlebotomy. Many of our programs are linked to credit courses, which eases the transition for the student who later desires to earn a certificate degree as LVN, RN, Medical Assistance or Lab Technician programs.”
LSC CF also has community programs offered through CE. The two that are most popular in the community are the Academy for Lifelong Learning, an educational and social based program for our senior citizens. With more than 350 members enrolled in various courses for continued intellectual and personal growth including computer knowledge, cake mixing, Home Energy Costs — Stop Blowing Money on Electricity and Meditation for Beginners.
