UHCL students, staff, help keep spirits bright

Updated: 12.29.08
University of Houston-Clear Lake students, faculty and staff thought about more than just finals and end-of-semester deadlines during the holidays.

Many groups of students, faculty and staff have taken some time away from their studies and semester wrap-up activities to give to those in need through numerous gift-gathering projects.

A popular annual tradition at the university, the Wish Tree Program is co-sponsored by the university’s Office of Intercultural and International Student Services and the Salvation Army.

All involved with the university were invited to select a name tag from the “Wish Tree” and to fulfill a special holiday wish for the person named.

This year, the program provided gifts to 90 children and 10 seniors in the area.

For the 2008 holiday season, UH-Clear Lake’s Educational Support Association and University Police joined forces to collect toys, clothing and other essentials for the women and children supported by Bay Area Turning Point.

“We are very thankful to the university employees and students who opened their hearts and donated so many items toward this worthy cause,” said Berenice Webster, UHCL executive secretary in the Office of the President.

“Their generosity despite losses of personal property due to Hurricane Ike is especially overwhelming. This type of commitment really shows the kindness of the people at UH-Clear Lake.”

“You CAN be the Hero” canned food drive was organized by the Student Government Association with a goal of having every student donate a canned food or non-perishable food item in time for Thanksgiving.

“We managed to collect a total of 1,623 food items and sent them to St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church and Interfaith Caring Ministries in time for Thanksgiving,” said Patrick Cardenas, Student Government Association president.

Students involved in UH-Clear Lake’s Management Association provided a holiday dinner for veterans in support of the Houston Vets Initiative.

“We selected this project because of one of our member’s passion for veterans as she is from a military family where her father, husband and brothers all are vets,” explained Abigail Fabien, president of The Management Association.

“We were very impressed with the work being done by Houston Vets Initiative. This project gave us the chance to show our appreciation to those who have served our country and now are disadvantaged.”

Cheryl Sawyer, UH-Clear Lake coordinator of counseling programs, not only organized collections related to Hurricane Ike but also at the holiday season.

“One of my counseling classes donated gifts for several teenagers who are in Galveston County foster care,” she said.

“Members of the Professional and Administrative Staff Association and several student groups collected gifts, money and gift cards that we are giving to social workers within the Dickinson School District who are collecting for children in San Leon who lost everything during Hurricane Ike.”

Although the holidays provide a special impetus for giving, the faculty, staff and students support various causes throughout the year including numerous blood drives, food collection activities and organization fundraising, as well as participating in Community Outreach Day, which gives the university faculty, staff and students a chance to volunteer in a number of community projects.
