Students of Spring ISD give generously over the holidays
By OBSERVER STAFF REPORTS
The students of Spring Independent School District showed their generosity this holiday season in many different ways.
A lot of schools started food drives before Thanksgiving to help fill the food banks at local charitable organizations. The students continued collecting food and have added other items ranging from toys and books to clothing and blankets on up until Christmas.
Here is a list of the charitable projects undertaken districtwide.
The Pat Reynolds Elementary School PTO organized a Thanksgiving food drive to support the families assisted by Northwest Assistance Ministries. For a school to school effort, the faculty, staff, and students also made donations of clothes, toiletries, food and school supplies to Rosenberg Elementary School in Galveston to support those victimized by Hurricane Ike.
Reynolds students created cards and wrote letters to soldiers in the United States military stationed overseas as well.
The Twin Creeks Middle School Student Council hosted a clothing drive to benefit Northwest Assistance Ministries. They collected new or gently used clothes and shoes for the less fortunate. Twin Creeks social studies classes collected clothing and school supplies to send to soldiers and families in Iraq.
Staff members at Beneke Elementary School “adopted” three families at the school for the holidays. Bicycles, clothing, dolls, activity books and tickets to a Dynamo soccer game were among the gifts collected for the families.
The students at Spring High School donated 1.5 pallets full of canned goods to a food drive that was run by the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association. Each Spring High football player was asked to bring in two cans with some bringing in as many as 20.
Smith Elementary School held its annual Smith Scottie Giving Tree collection to help students’ families who needed a little extra assistance in providing Christmas gifts for their kids. Those children, along with their siblings, were provided four gifts each through the generosity of staff, parents and community members. Over 230 gifts were collected for over 50 children.
Salyers Elementary School partnered with community members and organizations to provide for Salyers families who were in need around Christmas time.
The Bailey Middle School Order of the National Junior Honor Society sponsored a food drive in December for families in need. The staff collected gifts for residents of a residential treatment center. Sixth graders collected winter hats, gloves, socks, DVDs, Christmas treats, magazines, books, cards, and games for the Army’s Viper Company stationed in Korgenal, Afghanistan.
The Clark Intermediate School Student Council organized a collection of canned goods for local food pantries.
Heritage Elementary School collected over 1,700 canned food items for the Spring ISD Cop Adopt program. In addition, the school began in September collecting toys for the Northwest Assistance Ministries to distribute at Christmas.
Staff members at Meyer Elementary School bought toys and clothes for the children of 70 Meyer families. The annual Gifts of Greatness Tree was organized by counselors Tia Rachel and Kerri Kidder.
Link Elementary School participated in a toy drive for Texas Children’s Hospital that is sponsored annually by Starbucks.
