Driver on rampage leaves victims from LC to Galveston

A suspect is sitting in League City jail while police try to figure out why he allegedly began ramming other cars with his vehicle late Sunday night with his wife in the passenger seat.

Toefield Coleman, Jr., 44, was first spotted driving down Interstate 45 near FM 518 about 11:30 p.m. by a witness who followed him south to Galveston, giving updates to the 911 operator, League City Police Sgt. David Hausam said.

Throughout the 30-mile drive, Coleman allegedly rammed at least five other vehicles intentionally with his red Toyota Tundra, sending at least five people to the hospital, police said.

Hausam said the case, which encompasses several jurisdictions, is difficult to investigate, adding that there may have been more collisions and more injuries than originally reported.

Coleman’s wife was among those injured, Hausam said. Police believe that upon reaching Galveston, the truck blew a tire and Coleman’s wife shifted into park before escaping the vehicle.

Coleman was arrested at 8901 Ave. J in Galveston and on Monday was still being held in jail on an aggravated assault charge. The number of counts have yet to be determined.

Police have had trouble getting information on the incident from Coleman’s wife because of her injuries, and “he’s not talking to us,” Hausam said, adding that investigators have no clue as to why the rampage started.

“He kind of went off the handle,” Hausam said.

He added that District Attorney Kurt Sistrunk must decide whether to merge all of the assault charges into one case or divide them by jurisdiction.

Departments involved in the investigation include League City, Galveston Police Department, Galveston Sheriff’s Office and the Texas City Police Department.
