Fans travelling to the 2008 Region III meet will be greeted by a sea of blue and white jerseys; many of them will belong to Kingwood.

Kingwood’s boys and girls teams both took district titles.

In all, 16 Lady Mustangs will compete on the regional level, a staggering amount compared to most teams.

“I’m excited to have so many advance. I am glad for the girls because I know this is what they’ve wanted,” head coach Christie Burleson said. “Now it’s time to put all the hard work they’ve done all year into action and compete well.”

In the 400-meter run, Kingwood’s Lauren Garcia and Elizabeth Steptoe qualified by placing first and third, respectively.

Garcia ran the single lap in 59.74 seconds.

“It’s my senior year,” Garcia said. “So I’m excited I got to finish strong instead of just doing what I’m able to do; I want to do better.”

Garcia was behind in the race after the first 100 meters. After she took the lead, she felt someone on her heels. Unfazed, she finished ahead of the pack to give her team valuable points.

Winning the title in the 200-meter was Garcia’s teammate, Lauren Schopman. Schopman came from behind to place first in the 200-meter race with a qualifying time of 25.94 seconds.

“I’m really excited. I’ve had pretty good times this year, but I still got one more year,” Schopman said. “I can set my goals for next year and hope I get to state.”

Schopman and Garcia also competed in the both the 100-meter relay and mile relay. Both teams qualified.

Another notable performance was Kathryn Lupton’s double duty in both hurdle races where she finished first in both events.
