For three mothers and 11 children, Christmas came right on schedule thanks to some generous friends.

The Deer Park Rotary and Cenikor, a substance abuse rehabilitation center, teamed up to give one extended family unit something to celebrate on Christmas Day.

On Wednesday morning, toys, holiday meals and other gifts were delivered to a family in Deer Park by members of the Rotary.

For the third year, the Rotary partnered with Cenikor to adopt a family for the holidays and every year, the pay-off is worth it for both participants.

“They pick out the biggest family that is doing without,” said Doug Richards, Cenikor’s Deer Park facilitator.

The Deer Park Rotary partners with Cenikor for various projects and Rae Sinor, a Rotary member, always knows she can depend on full support and effort.

“They are always a great partner,” she said.

Every Christmas, the residents of Cenikor receive gift cards on behalf of the facility and for the last three years, those residents have given those gifts cards to the project as well as organized fundraisers throughout the year.

“They took this on three years ago and we came out here not knowing what to expect,” said Sinor. “They surprised me that night.”

That first year, residents of Cenikor presented members of the Rotary with a massive gift card.

“There were so excited I was speechless because it was so touching,” said Sinor.

On Tuesday evening, Cenikor residents presented their contribution for this year: a check for $1,650 and a box full of toys.

“They just continue to overwhelm us,” she said.

The families adopted in the project are equally overwhelmed.

“They are always blown away,” said Sinor. “They know we’re coming, but they don’t know the magnitude.”
