Eagles upset Cleveland to take championship in own tourney

The Gulf Coast Classic which is an annual boys and girls basketball tournament each year is hosted by Barbers Hill high school. The teams range from the class 5-A level to the 2-A class. With over 30 teams in it each year the Classic is one of the more competitive tournaments around.
This year was even better for Barbers Hill as the Eagles made it to the championship game and then went on and upset the Cleveland Indians 58-50 in the championship game to take the first place trophy.
The Eagles made it to the finals with a an opening day 59-54 victory over Little Cypress-Mauriceville and a Tuesday 49-29 win over Goose Creek Memorial.
In the win against Cleveland it was a game of streaks. The Indians jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the games opening three minutes before Barbers Hill answered with a 6-0 run of their own to tie things at 6 apiece.
The first quarter ended with the Eagles holding a 13-12 lead. Barbers Hill then started the second quarter with an 11-0 run to lead 24-12 midway through the quarter.
Back would come the Indians as they put together an 11-1 run just before the half to cut the Eagle lead to 25-23 at the half.
The Eagles then came out of the locker room and started the second half with a 5-0 run to take a 30-23 lead in the opening couple of minutes of the third quarter. Cleveland then cut the lead to 35-33 at the end of the quarter as they ended the quarter on a 10-5 run.
The fourth quarter stayed tight. Holding on to a slim 48-46 lead in the final quarter it was Barbers Hill ending the game on a 10-4 run to take the eight point win.
"This was a big win for us," said Barbers Hill head coach Nathan Toon. "This tournament is a big one for this community and it was nice for us to keep the championship trophy here."
Ian Hamlin led the Eagles in scoring with 23 points and 10 rebounds. The senior guard also added four steals and finished the tournament with 59 points. Richard Minnick added 11 points while teammate Jake Miller had seven points and six rebounds.
Barbers Hill will return to District 19-4A play this Tuesday night as they head to Sheldon to face C.E. King.
