The Dayton Broncos got some much needed work in before resuming district 19-4A play on Tuesday night. Last week the Broncos played in the Annual Gulf Coast Classic on the campus of Barbers Hill.

The Broncos entered the tournament straight off of a big 33-31 victory over Kingwood Park to open district play.

In the victory against the Panthers it was Dayton coming back after starting the game off slowly.

Kingwood Park led 10-3 after one quarter of play before the Broncos came back in the second quarter and outscored the Panthers 12-6 to cut the Panther lead to 16-15 at the half.

Drey Bradford who led the Broncos in scoring with 13 points led the second half charge as Dayton notched the two point victory.

In the Gulf Coast Classic, in their second game of the tournament, the Broncos welcomed back guard A.J. Dugat who just finished coming off an All-State performance on the football field. Dugat also is a two-time all district performer on the basketball court.

"We are glad to have A.J. and our football guys back on the court with us," said Dayton head basketball coach Geoff McCracken.

With Dugat back on the court, Dayton faced Little Cypress-Mauriceville in their second game of the classic. Needing a win to play for a Wednesday trophy the Broncos scrapped and played hard against the Bears but came up on the short end of a 54-51 decision. Dayton got things off to a good start in the first quarter as they jumped on LC-M and led 13-10 after one quarter of play.

The Bears came back and outscored the Broncos 16-11 in the second quarter to lead by two at the half.

In the third quarter it Dayton coming back to win the quarter by two to tie the score at 33 apiece heading into the final quarter.

A high scoring fourth quarter saw LC-M win it 21-18 to take the three point victory. The Broncos had a chance to tie it and send the game into over-time but a Bradford three-pointer at the buzzer went in and out.

"We got the look we wanted the ball just did not go in," said McCracken.

"It was a good game for us and we played pretty well," added McCracken. "We got six guys from football so we are trying to get our rotation set."

Dugat scored 13 points in his return back while teammate Travis Honeycutt led the Broncos in scoring with 14 points. The Bears were lead by Cameron Johnson and Hunter Gonzales who both scored 15 points apiece.

On Monday afternoon in their first game of the tournament it was Silsbee sending Dayton into the loser’s bracket.

Frank Smesny led the Broncos in scoring with seven points.

Dayton will return to District 19-4A action Tuesday night when they travel to Baytown to face Goose Creek Memorial. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The Broncos will then play North Forest at home on Friday.

"We need to go Baytown and take care of business on Tuesday," said McCracken. "It is tough to win on the road so we want to go over there and play well."
