Top 10 Dayton News Articles of 2008
Looking back at 2008, many things happened in and around our coverage area that affected different people in differing ways. Here, in the opinion of the editor, are the those headlines and articles that led the others during a very eventful and exciting year. Articles are listed in order of importance to the area based upon response by readers at the time.
1. State Bound Dayton Broncos – Although only a very recent headline, there is no doubt that this accomplishment by the high school football team is the biggest thing to hit the City of Dayton since it became a town. Not only did it do more to put this town on the map, but with more than 8,000 fans in San Antonio, it was the biggest single destination migration ever seen as almost everyone from Dayton drove to San Antonio for the state championship game.
2. Dayton devastated by Ike – Before all is said and done, with the city still negotiating with FEMA for debris removal from Hurricane Ike that saw its massive eye come over Dayton in September, Hurricane Ike was to date, the most destructive hurricane to hit Liberty County.
3. It starts with a collect telephone call from the Harris County Jail – Not since the inception of this newspaper has one headline gotten so much response from readers. Emails and phone calls from many readers indicated they had all been affected by this scam to acquire phone services from local phones.
4. New buildings indication of economic growth – The construction of four business properties, two industrial and two commercial business locations, especially in the wake of Hurricane Ike, showed new progress in the growth of Dayton, home of the largest school district in Liberty County.
5. Area banks immune to bailout necessities – With so many national and world banks needing to be bailed out by US taxpayers, local banks serving the Liberty County area with sound lending and business practices are sound financially and without need of any bailout by the federal government.
6. Odyssey of the Mind 5th in World – Two groups, one from the high school and one from Nottingham Middle School competed in last week’s Odyssey of the Mind World Competition with Nottingham taking 5th place in the world.
7. Bronco Drumline - On Monday, April 14, the Bronco Drumline presented their award-winning performance of The Tortoise and the Hare which took them to within a fraction of winning STATE!
8. Freight shuttles provide transportation alternative – A new innovation in freight transportation technology was unveiled last week when the concept of “freight shuttles” was explained to a roomful at the Liberty Community Room.
9. Hutchison stops in Liberty County on tour – Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison made her first stop in Liberty County as part of a state-wide tour.
10. Child Abuse! – This multi-part story on child abuse from its causes, to investigations, charges being filed, prosecution and the role played by child advocates was covered.
