As the soccer season kicks off today local coaches do not seem very concerned with wins and losses early in the season.
“We are not worried about wins and losses at all right now,” The Woodlands head coach Hans Kleinschmidt said. “The early part of the season is all about gaining some valuable varsity experience for the kids who have not been there before.”
The Woodlands boys and girls, who are both ranked No. 1 in Region II-5A, host tournaments beginning today.
The Highlanders open the 16-team Kilt Cup with a battle against No. 6 Cy Woods at 1 p.m.
“There is a big difference between game speed and practice speed,” Kleinschmidt said. “Early season tournaments are a good chance for the guys to get used to the speed of the game.”
The Lady Highlander Tournament features 24 teams including three of the top four teams in Region II.
The Lady Highlanders open against Morton Ranch at 3 p.m. while College Park plays Arlington Heights at 7 p.m.
“This is probably one of the strongest fields we’ve had from top to bottom,” Lady Higlanders coach Dina Graves said. “We are just excited to get back on the field and play again.”
The Montgomery High Invitational begins Friday with the Bears battling C.E. King at 1 p.m. and Magnolia High taking on Aldine Eisenhower at 5 p.m.
“We are looking to get our players back used to playing in a competitive atmosphere,” Montgomery head coach Johnny Gonzales said. “It’s an early indication of which players can do what we want them to do and which players can’t.”
Other local teams like the Oak Ridge boys will begin their seasons at out-of-town tournaments. The War Eagles travel to the Friendswood Tournament today.
Many first-year coaches, including Oak Ridge’s Jason Fanning, will be making their debuts today.
Last season the War Eagles finshed 1-18. But Fanning is familiar with taking over programs with losing records. After taking over for an 0-25 Alvin team, Fanning led the school to the playoffs in his first season.
“I have a bit of a history of turning programs around,” Fanning said. “The excitment is here to have a winning soccer program. We just need to use the early part of the season to figure out which guys are going to step up and take the leadership roles.”
The Willis boys and girls teams from Willis, Caney Creek, Magnolia West and New Caney open the season with non-district matches Friday.
For both the Magnolia West boys and girls the 2009 season is the first as a varsity program.
“We are excited to get started and see how far we need to go to be a top program,” said Lady Mustangs’ coach Katie McGuire, whose team opens at home against Aldine MacArthur. “It should be an exciting season.”
