African-American Read-In

Over a million readers of all ages and ethnic across the United States are expected to participate in the 20th Annual African American Read-In. The Barbara Bush Branch Library and the E.B.O.N.Y. organization will join forces as official sponsors of this event locally. The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities.

Activities are planned for adults, teens, and children on Sunday, February 8th, from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the Barbara Bush Branch Library, 6817 Cypresswood Dr. in Spring. Authors Reshonda Tate Billingsley, Gwen Richardson, and Oswald Scott are some of the featured guests for this event. Come, discuss, and hear excerpts from their various novels. Two of Ms. Billingsley’s titles are Can I get a Witness? and Let the Church Say Amen. Some of her teen books are: Nothing But Drama, Blessings in Disguise, and Fair Weather Friends. Mrs, Richardson is the author of Why African Americans Can’t Get Ahead and How We Can Solve it with Group Economics. Mr. Scott has penned The Promise: a Black Man’s Guide to Money, Power, and Respect.

The session for children will be in the Robin Bush Activity Room. Kathy Culmer, author and storyteller, will be our featured guest for the children. She will tell African and African-American folk tales. There will also be other activities for the children. Ms. Culmer is also the author of a devotional book called Yes, Jesus Loves Me. Check out some of these books prior to the event so that you may participate in the discussions. Refreshments will be served and books will be on sale by the Barbara Bush Library Friends.

E.B.O.N.Y. (Enrichment and Brotherhood Organization of Northwest Youth) has had a longstanding and mutual relationship with the library.. The group was founded to promote unity among neighbors through opportunities for members and their families to learn, teach, and socialize with other community members. They especially encourage children to take pride in their cultural identity by securing a greater knowledge of their heritage an its relationship to other cultures.

Spotlight on Local Authors

The Barbara Bush Public Library is pleased to present local author Fran Padgett for an open discussion of her second book "Breast Cancer: No One Chose This Journey," February 11, 2009, 2-4 PM and February 15, 2009, 2-4 PM. Fran received multiple national awards for her first book, "Breast Cancer Recovery: No One Wrote A Manual" including the 2007 Benjamin Franklin Silver for Health/Women's Issues and Book of the Year; Most Life Changing.

Both books, published by BAYOU PUBLISHING, are strikingly illustrated with the author's full-color paintings which were created in response to personal stories of women who have walked the path of breast cancer. Her discussion will encourage questions and comments. Both books will be available for signing. You are also invited to the Library's Art Alcove where selected paintings from her second book are displayed for the month of February.

"A mentor for the journey no one ever intends to take, Fran Padgett gives us ways to explore our own thoughts and feelings about a still-taboo subject by relating the stories of others." Ida Stewart, Attorney, The Woodlands.

"Many individuals will find peace in her work and for all those, Fran, we thank you. It is just a joy to see how your beautiful art is such an inspiration for so many." Daina Pitzenberger, R.N., V.P. Cannon Design

Consultants.

Art Alcove -- Second Floor - Fran Padgett: A Selection of Journey Paintings" Artist and author Fran Padgett will display selected paintings featured in her newly-released book "Breast Cancer: No One Chose This Journey." These emotion-laden, often symbolic works are from two of her private collections, the Gift of Time series, and Other side of the Mountain series. Through her art and writings, Fran shares the triumphs, the sadness, the intensely personal choices and the ironies of dealing with the reality of breast cancer in her own life and the lives of others. A gifted and prolific artist, she has painted nearly all her life. Her paintings have been included in group shows, one-artist exhibits, galleries, banks and corporate offices around the country, and here in Houston at the Breast Center of Houston Northwest Medical Center and the Law Offices of Stewart and Wiley. Fran's paintings can be seen in the lobby of the Hilton Garden Inn Houston Northwest on SH 249, and at The Garden of the Dragonfly gallery Old Town Spring. Born in Minnesota, Fran has lived in many states from coast to coast. Because she loves Texas the most she now calls Houston home. Refreshments provided by the Barbara Bush Library Friends.

Book Clubs at the Barbara Bush Branch Library

February 10 @ 7:00 PM The Evening Book Club at the Barbara Bush Branch Library, 6817 Cypresswood Drive, will discuss Cane River by Lalita Tademy. “The author transported herself back to the early 1800s, to an isolated, close-knit rural community on Louisiana's Cane River. Here, Tademy takes historical fact and mingles it with fiction to weave a vivid account of what life was like for the four remarkable women who came before her. The result is a family saga that sweeps from the early days of slavery into a pre-Civil Rights South -- a unique and moving slice of America's past that will resonate with readers for generations to come. (HCPL catalog). The book club meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month on the 2nd floor of the library in the WCR Conference Room. The March selection is: The Fiction Class by Susan Breen.

February 26 @ 1:30 PM The Afternoon Book Club Barbara Bush Branch Library will discuss: Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. "In 1993 Greg Mortenson was an American mountain-climbing bum wandering emaciated and lost through Pakistan's Karakoram. After he was taken in and nursed back to health by the people of a Pakistani village, he promised to return one day and build them a school. From that rash, earnest promise grew one of the most incredible humanitarian campaigns of our time--Mortenson's one-man mission to counteract extremism by building schools, especially for girls, throughout the breeding ground of the Taliban. In a region where Americans are often feared and hated, he has survived kidnapping, death threats, and wrenching separations from his wife and children. But his

success speaks for itself--at last count, his Central Asia Institute has built fifty-five schools." HCPL Catalog). The March selection is The Sparrow by Maria Russell Doria. The group meets the 4th Thursday of each month in the Earl Elliott meeting room off the foyer on the first floor.

February 16 @ 7:00 pm The Great Books Discussion Group will meet in the WCR Conference Room of the Barbara Bush Branch Library. The Group meets on the third Monday of each month from 7:00-8:45 PM. The selection for February is: The Virtues by Dewey. Please call Earl Bissex 281-955-9447 for information. The selection for March is Iphigeneia at Aulis by Euripides.
