Complete with trains, lights, feathers, hand-painted plastic cranberries and residents of Dr. Seuss’s Whoville, Entrance C at Kingwood Medical Center was decked out with holiday spirit and full of decorated trees.

Various departments throughout the hospital participated in the holiday tree decorating contest for the fifth year in a row. Each department had to come up with its own creative decoration for its 6-foot tree, and more than 25 trees were decorated and entered into the contest. Each department gets very competitive to see who can come up with the best and most creative decorations for their mini-tree.

The trees will be donated to children in the community, chosen by the nonprofit group Society of St. Stephen, for the holidays.

“We participate in this every year because it is fun and it is all for a good cause. This year we have doubled the amount of children we will be helping, so we are excited,” marketing director Marilyn Gerry said.

In addition to the holiday tree, each department is also collecting toys, clothing and personal items which will be donated to children through the Society of St. Stephen.

A few of the departments got a chance to pick the children they wanted to give their donations to and the Intensive Care Unit department chose to help 35 children.

All in all, Kingwood Medical Center will be helping close to 145 children get a chance to celebrate the holidays they might not have if it was not for the hospital’s help.

“We have had the greatest turnout of decorated trees this year, which is a good thing because we are helping many more families,” Kingwood Medical CEO Gay Nord said.

The trees were judged in four categories: most traditional, most beautiful, best children’s theme and most creative.

They will be on display in the foyer of Entrance C until Dec. 12, when they will be taken to the children’s homes for their families to enjoy throughout the holidays.
