The Lamar girls and boys swim teams were big winners last week at the annual Trucks and Teddy Bears meet at Lamar High School.

The meet was designed to give the teams a final competition before the Christmas break, and the swimmers also collected toy trucks and teddy bears to give to needy children over the holidays.

The Lamar girls scored 203 points to easily finish ahead of second place St. Agnes, which had 88.

The boys had a much tougher time, but still put up 183 points to win with Strake Jesuit coming in with 121.

The Lamar girls took first place in eight out of 12 events, including all three relay races, to easily pace the field.

In fact, the home team dominated the relay events, scoring a lot of points with head coach “Mac” McDonald using just about all his girls in different races.

The Redskins were winners in the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.32), the 200 free relay (1:49.06) and the 400 free relay (4:02.61).

But they also racked up points by coming in third, fourth and fifth in the medley; second, fourth and fifth in the 200 free and second, third and fifth in the 400 free.

The triumphant medley-relay team was a young Lamar group with sophomore Jordan Berger, sophomore Madison Kuhner, sophomore Amber Carter and freshman Amber Yanez making up that team.

In the 200 free, senior Amy Ballanfant, Douglas, Sydney Bottoms and Ali Berry were the Lamar representatives, while it was Ballanfant, Douglas, Carter and Berry in the 400.

Berry, a senior, also led the Lamar effort individually with two victories. She was first in the 200 free (1:56.99) and the 500 free (5:07.13). She placed ahead of teammate Samantha Pudwill in the 200 and the freshman Yanez in the 500.

Kuhner in the 100 butterfly (1:05.92), Ballanfant in the 100 free (55.90), and Douglas in the 100 backstroke (1:07.31) were the other Lamar champions.

In fact, Lamar also went 1-2 in all three events with Carter the runner-up in the 100 butterfly, while Bottoms was second in the 100 free and Berger was second in the 100 backstroke.

St. Agnes senior Kristina Kontrimas won two races to lead her team.

She captured gold in the 200 individual medley (2:19.19) and the 50 free (25.28). She won the 200 medley race by more than 20 seconds.

Van Anh Hoang in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.50) and Katie Rose (182.00 points) in the 1-meter diving had St. Agnes’ other two individual first places.

For the boys, Lamar won two relay races and freshman David Owens and Eamon Kelly captured two individual events apiece to spark the Redskins’ victory.

But Strake Jesuit was right there for most of the day, collecting a relay win while also taking home five individual first places, including two from Kevin Mehrinfar.

The Redskins touched the wall first in the 200 (1:37.48) and 400 (3:28.72) free relays.

The foursome of sophomore Elliott Rohan and Clayton Cruthirds, Nick Tiras and Kelly swam the 200, and the team of Owens, Tiras, Evan Bernard, and Kelly claimed first in the 400.

Strake Jesuit was second in both of those races.

The quartet of Mehrinfar, Zuiker, Gabe Puccini and Stephen Balhoff was just behind the winner in the 200 free (1:40:29) and it was Zuiker, Balhoff, Chris Jennis and Tran second in the 400 (3:45.91).

For Lamar, besides his excellent work as the anchor leg on two victorious relays, Kelly was the winner in the 50 free (23.82) and the 100 free (53.20). Tiras was second in both events for Lamar.

Owens also hit the daily double with his success, placing first in the 200 individual medley (2:11.34) and the 100 butterfly (59.04) for the Redskins. He had to work in the butterfly, though, just edging out Khang Tran of Strake Jesuit (59.07) by three-tenths of a second.

Nate Zuiker of Strake Jesuit was second in the 200 IM (2:21.60) behind Owens.

Mehrinfar had two of the Crusaders’ first places. He was the medalist in the boys 100 breaststroke (1:05.31) and the 200 free (1:57.51).

He placed ahead of teammate Michael Shemenski in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.15) and Cruthirds of Lamar in the 200 free (2:01.18).

Strake’s other wins came from Zuiker in the 500 free (5:39.89), Jennis in the 100 backstroke (59.42) and Matt Kenny in the 1-meter diving competition (180.55 points).

In a 500 free race that was rather close at the end, Zuiker defeated Lamar swimmer William Marshak (5:48.73) by less than nine seconds.

Jennis edged out Bernard (1:00.86) of Lamar by just over a second to emerge the winner in the 100 backstroke.

In the diving, Kenny was first with two Lamar freshman divers right behind him.

Jack Berggren was the runner-up (144.30) points and Jack Haley was third.

The Crusaders relay victory came in the 200 medley, where Strake Jesuit topped Lamar by just over three seconds.

An all-senior group of Jennis, Mehrinfar, Tran and Balhoff had the winning time (1:47.32) with Bernhard, Owens, Scott Ravyts, and Cruthirds placing second for Lamar (1:50.56)

Both teams are now off until after the New Year when they will resume the regular season with the district meets scheduled for the end of January.
