San Jacinto College South's nursing program continues a tradition of excellence with news that students in a challenging and demanding field performed well on the state licensing exam.
Students in the program's associate degree nursing (ADN) mobility program logged a 92 percent pass rate for the 2007-08 school year on the National Council Licensure Examination Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) licensing exam, higher than the state average of 90.53 percent.
The NCLEX exam is a comprehensive and stringent test and an ADN graduate must pass the licensing exam to practice as a registered nurse in the United States.
San Jacinto College South's ADN mobility program is somewhat different than other nursing study plans, according to Mini Jose, program director at the South campus.
"The mobility program is designed for working LVNs and 23paramedics to earn an associate degree in nursing and become a registered nurse while maintaining their employment," Jose commented. "Our mobility program offers flexible scheduling, online courses and evening and weekend classes to fit any student's needs."
Jose says the demand continues to be high for well-trained nurses in the Houston area, and the career offers good pay.
"There is a nursing shortage nationally and with the presence of an ever growing medical center, demand for registered nurses is huge in Houston," she remarked. "A person can expect a good income after earning a two-year degree in a nursing field from San Jacinto College. A graduate can earn more than $60,000 a year, excluding overtime and shift differentials."
Jose says the job placement rate for students who earn a two-year nursing degree and pass the licensing exam is typically very high, and most graduates of the San Jacinto College program are employed upon graduation. "If not employed, it is usually by their own choice due to other commitments," she commented.
San Jacinto College student Susan Koctar, who lives in Webster, says the South campus ADN mobility program is helping her to develop in her career. "All the instructors are wonderful and I feel I am receiving the greatest education in a small class atmosphere," she remarked.
Koctar says she also likes the flexible class schedules and online course options. While she prefers the traditional classroom learning, she has taken online courses. “The online courses have well-defined schedules for assignments and testing. Contacting the instructor was not usually necessary, but e-mails and phone calls were returned with questions answered,” added Koctar. “All of my instructors are very approachable and I feel they have a sincere interest in the success of their students. "
The program also provides valuable on-the-job experience through internships, also called "clinicals." Clinicals provide students an opportunity to not only improve on skills they’ve learned in the classroom, but it’s a chance for them to learn new skills as well.
"We are assigned to a nurse, who oversees our work,” explains Koctar. “Our instructor makes rounds to evaluate us and provide guidance if we are performing a new skill, or just need a little encouragement with a new experience. The clinical rotations give you an opportunity to explore new areas. The internship gives you confidence that you can use the knowledge you have gained in the classroom and apply it in a clinical situation."
San Jacinto College offers a wide range of nursing and allied health two-year degree, and one-year certificate programs at all three campuses. San Jacinto College North is located at 5800 Uvalde Road in the North Channel area. The Central campus is located at 8060 Spencer Hwy. in Pasadena. San Jacinto College South is located at 13735 Beamer Road in the South Belt-Ellington area. Registration for the Spring semester is currently under way online or on campus.
