Sablatura Middle School students are putting their own spin on the holiday spirit of caring and giving with goodwill toward animals.

The Sablatura Humane Society Youth Club, along with other students and school staff, recently raised $1,000 for Bay Area Pet Adoptions, a local non-profit shelter that feeds, houses and treats adoptable animals. The money will help the shelter and Kellie, a dog abandoned at the facility after Hurricane Ike. Kellie, who is ready for adoption, came in needing treatment for a broken pelvis and shot wounds.

For a month, club members collected donations for the shelter in a jar in the Sablatura lobby. On Dec. 16, Sarah Wright, shelter manager, brought Kellie to the campus to meet the students.

In addition to community involvement, students participate in educational programs about animals. Judy Jones, a Great Dane Rescue of North Texas volunteer, spoke with students Dec. 9 about fostering and training animals. Jones’s rescued Great Dane, Scooby, serves as a certified therapy dog in hospitals, schools and other facilities.

“The empathy that the students show for animals is amazing,” Melisa Jackson, club sponsor, said. “They are not only concerned about animal welfare but committed to educating others and taking responsibility themselves.”
