Magnolia man shot in family dispute

By Lucretia Cardenas
Updated: 01.05.09
SOUTHWEST COUNTY – A disagreement during a family get-together Friday night led to a shooting that critically injured a Magnolia man who reportedly fired the first shots, law enforcement said.

Maxie Huntsman, 44, suffered wounds to his abdomen and the upper part of an arm during the incident in the 25000 block of Decker Prairie Rosehill Road, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Detective Paul Hahs said.

No charges have been filed against anyone involved in the shooting, which is still under investigation.

Family members were outside when the disagreement erupted around 8:30 p.m.

Huntsman allegedly ran inside the house and grabbed a 12-gauge shotgun. When he returned, he allegedly fired two rounds of birdshot at a family member and a friend, Hahs said.

Others outside, at least six people, took cover behind their vehicles. At least two of the family members grabbed their guns, which were stored in their vehicles from target practice earlier in the day.

When Huntsman allegedly pointed the gun at his mother-in-law, a family member allegedly shot him, Hahs said.

No one else was injured.

“According to what they told the Sheriff’s Office, they were not trying to kill him, but they feared him hurting the mother-in-law,” Hahs said.

Family members immediately called for an ambulance and medic following the shooting, he said.

Huntsman was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where he remained in critical condition Sunday evening, Hahs said.

His family members, who live at the residence where the shooting occurred, could not be reached for comment.

Anyone with information about the case should call Hahs at (936) 760-5876.

" Splendora??? I believe the article referenced M-A-G-N-O-L-I-A Texas, Splendora is 40+/- miles away. Just a little difference, I realize, but a difference none the less. Must be the tri-focals huh. Bottom right corner of your screen is the "zoom level" --- bump it up a little - maybe 125%?? "

" a typical "whiskey-a-go-go" reaction.... making lite of a serious situation.

as for the area, the location, the territory as some might ellude to, well, that isnt relative, unless they were distant relatives ???.

lets not forget, these folks have guns, and they just might have prevented a bad situation from becoming horrific.

in going to be just fine in zero nine...... "

" It sounds as if this family get together was BYOG!

This dude comes out with a scatter gun, fires the first 2 shots AND DOESN'T HIT A THING?

I hope he doesn't do much bird hunting with that 12 guage....he literally couldn't hit the broad side of a barn!

He needs to sell that shotgun to me. I'll put it to good use... "

No booze involved in this one????
Nothin like a little southern justice.
Good family. They shot him and were nice enough to call for medical assistance.
Nothin to see here folks, nothin to see. "

" its idiots like this that only add fire to the people hollering for more gun control but this proves once again - its people at fault - not the guns. BTW, I like the BYOG comment as well lol!!! "

" Come one W.E., Give them a break. I'm sure that during the investigation we will find that each one of them have an official Texas gun permit. Or maybe you don't need one if all you're doing is some "target practice". This all must have taken place before "target practice" because everyone's guns were still loaded and in the car. Just a suggestion, put the target on a pole and don't take turns holding it.

Geee and I thought getting together with my wife's family was bad. Glad they were all family and friends. Just think if it were strangers and they hated each other. "

I love this argument...it works on so many levels!

It's the people's fault - not the drugs. Why control them??

It's the people driving fast- not the cars. Why have speed limits??

See? It works for almost anything!

The simple truth is, laws are never for the majority of smart, responsible people. Laws are for the idiots that seldom follow them anyway. In Cut-N-Shoot, we call that a "Catch 22". "

" sure, splendora, magnolia, new caney, porter and yes, grand harbor - because of sue horne and t&w water company

there is no "u" in the spelling of grand harbor, by the way.. april sound, on the other hand has 4 or 5 streets with "harbour" in their names - not a 40 mile mistake but a mistake none the less

happy new year, again "

" This gives a whole new meaning to I can't get along with my mother-in-law! Wonder if the wife/daughter was the one that shot him! Sounds like a Jerry Springer episode.......you know the routine.....the daughter defends the husband and then all of the sudden she hates him and sides with the mom!!!! I agree the BYOG is a hilarious comment! BigTexN that was good!!! Six people took cover and he hit no one......sounds like he needed to go to shooting practice with them! LOL "

" "It's the people - not the guns" arguement....
This works for matches also.... It all reminds me of a saying my dad would say; "Locking the doors only keeps the honest people out".... A book of matches is just that until some IDIOT decides to set some house on fire.
From what I heard on the scanner, I believe the magnolia man was shot by a female on location. "Annie getcher gun, Pops dun gone crazy and tryin to shoot the in-MAW" Still laughing at the "BYOG" comment.... Gonna have a party just so I can send out BYOG on the invites.. Ya'll make sure to check ya'lls mailboxes.... "
