With 2009 right around the corner, Dairy Day Rodeo Queen Contest organizers are already looking for potential candidates to become the next Dairy Day Queen. The actual rodeo and the naming of the rodeo queen won’t take place until April, but candidates for rodeo queen must be signed up by the Jan. 19 deadline.

The application process includes a $100 entry fee and a “head shot” photo. The application is available online at http://www.angelfire.com/folk/dairyday/Entryqueen.html. Applications will be submitted on Jan. 19 at the log cabin at Stancil Park in Cleveland. Applications are also available through local Ag Science teachers or through the County Extension Office during the second week of January or by calling 1-800-537-4730, ext. 212.

In order to qualify, a candidate must be a Liberty County girl and must be single and have no children. Additionally, she can only hold the title once, must be passing all courses in school and provide Academic Eligibility in compliance with UIL rules. The rules also state that contestants who spend more than three days in in-school suspension (ISS) or one day in an alternative education program (AEP) during the time frame of Jan. 19 through April 18 will have 50 points deducted from their score.

Contestants will be judged on poise and interview along with attire, essay, monies raised, eligibility information and typed donation list. The attire will be Western skirt and blouse or dress worn with a hat and boots. This judging will take place at a special queens luncheon on April 11 starting at 11 a.m.

Contestants will also be judged on horsemanship. According to contest organizers, there will be three practices and two different judging sessions. Practices will be held on Feb. 21 and 28 at 10 a.m. Contestants must attend at least two of the practices. Horsemanship will be judged on March 28 and April 18 at 10 a.m. each day.

Other rules apply. Please see the Cleveland Livestock Show and Rodeo website at http://www.angelfire.com/folk/dairyday/Entryqueen.html.
