THE WOODLANDS – With the New Year comes new resolutions, and members of the South Montgomery County YMCA may be paying more to reach those goals.
But along with the increase in fees comes the opportunity to use any YMCA in the Greater Houston area, according to officials.
“There is a small group of Ys…that are taking their household memberships to a city-wide membership,” said Trazanna Moreno, YMCA of Great Houston communications director.
The South Montgomery County YMCA is included in that group. The monthly membership fees were so close to those of the city-wide membership fees, officials decided that an upgrade to a city-wide membership was the best option, said Roxanne Davis, YMCA North Group marketing director.
“The monthly fees have increased a couple of dollars and it upgrades them to a city-wide membership, which means they can use any YMCA in the Greater Houston area,” Davis said. “When you think about it, it’s fabulous because so many people in The Woodlands work in Houston, so they can workout close to work and also utilize the Y by their home.”
The Greater Houston YMCA includes more than 35 locations from Huntsville to Galveston.
Memberships for two adults with children, now $74 per month, will be $77 for city-wide membership. The current monthly membership fee for two adults or a single adult with children will go from $71 to $72 for a city-wide membership.
Additional memberships (not city-wide) include a single adult for $51 per month, two senior citizens for $48 per month and a student or single senior citizen for $35 per month.
“Everyone starts their New Year with their resolutions with good intentions and they’re hitting the gym as much as they can,” said Levitia Simmons, South County YMCA health and wellness director. “We have a variety of classes that don’t feel like a work out.”
In the beginning of the year, the YMCA receives a increase in registrations for classes and people active in the gym, weight room and scheduling appointments with personal trainers, Simmons said.
To achieve a fitness or weight loss goal, Simmons recommends starting slow and making reasonable goals. The best plan includes cardio exercise – such as walking, running, biking or swimming – three times a week and weight training twice a week, she said.
Each YMCA location features fitness classes, personal trainers and computerized programs to keep track of progress.
“If you don’t know where to start in the gym, we have lots of people that can help you,” Simmons said.
