GPJC Rotary presents gifts, food to local families

Delfina Perez and her four children received presents, turkey, ham and can goods from Galena Park Rotary. Delfina said she was very excited and very thankful for the help. Their apartment was ruined during Hurricane Ike and they had to live with family members until another apartment was available.

Thanks to the efforts of Galena Park High School students, seven families received a load of holiday food and gifts through the Galena Park/Jacinto City Rotary Club through their annual Christmas Family Drive.

The nurses at local schools found families they felt had the most needs. They submitted the names to the club and on Dec. 17, the club members went out to the schools to deliver the goods. The food consisted of a turkey, ham, and canned goods with some toys added in.

One family had children who attend Jacinto City Elementary. School Nurse Teresa Rainer chose the Perez family to be the recipient of the food and gifts this year.

“It’s awesome,” Rainer said “They are helping out a lot of families. It brings excitement to them they might not have otherwise.”

The students at Galena Park High School were able to collect the items through a food drive they held for the occasion.

Members of the club went out to deliver the food in person, sometimes even going to their homes. Any food that was left over went to Judge Biggs’ Galena Park Food Pantry. The schools included Jacinto City Elementary, McArthur Elementary, Galena Park Elementary, Pyburn Elementary, Woodland Acres Elementary and Our Lady of Fatima.

During the club’s meeting Dec. 17, the choir from Galena Park Middle School, led by Laurie Ballesteros, sang Christmas songs.
