The weather may or may not cooperate in time for a steaming bowl of homemade chili, but residents looking to get their hands on some of the best stew there is will soon have their chance.

The Baytown-Highlands Metro Committee will host its 29th annual Chili and Barbecue Cook Off Jan. 9 and 10 at San Jacinto Mall.

More than 60 teams will be competing in this year’s cook-off for awards for Best Brisket, Ribs, Chicken, Beans and, of course , Chili.

Live entertainment will be on hand throughout the event starting at 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday with judging all day Saturday.

Public tickets will be on sale at the event for $5 and include a cup of chili/barbecue sandwich and a soft drink. Proceeds from the event will benefit the 2009 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The Rotary Club of Highlands’ annual Chili Feast is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Feb. 7, at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, 800 S. Main.

Rotarians will be selling bowls of their special-recipe chili that day as part of the organization’s largest fund-raiser. Added attractions include raffle drawings for prizes ranging from a digital camera to a brand new truck.

Money raised from the Chili Feast and raffle is used by the club to offer scholarships to local high school students. Last year more than $26,000 in scholarships was awarded to students from Crosby ISD, Goose Creek ISD, Barber’s Hill ISD and the Chinquapin School.

“The community generally gets behind our club and supports us very well, so we want to give back to them,” said club President-elect Robert Woodall.

Raffle tickets can be purchased from Rotarians for $100 each and are good for one entry in the prize drawings. On Saturday the first ticket drawn will receive a digital camera, while the 100th ticket will receive a home theater system.

The 300th ticket holder will receive a Nintendo Wii system, while the 599th ticket drawn will win a 32-inch LCD flat screen television.

The grand prize – a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado – will be awarded to the holder of the 600th ticket drawn.

Chili fans who are just looking to get their hands on a hot meal can purchase tickets for $7 , good for two bowls of chili.
