Proposed new attendance zones affect TISD elementaries, intermediates
By ANNA SCHUMANN
A forum held by Tomball Independent School District Dec. 17 showed parents whether or not their children would be attending a different school due to zoning changes beginning in August 2009.
In August, Beckendorf Intermediate School is to close and its students will move to Tomball Intermediate. The beginning of the new school year also will mark the opening of the district’s first school in The Woodlands, which is its first K-6 school, Creekside Forest Elementary School.
A re-alignment committee made up of district administrators, school principals and district parents has met five times since mid-October when parents were selected at random to discuss how school attendance zones should change.
David Schuelke, assistant superintendent of ancillary services, served as the facilitator for the committee. Schuelke said the committee looked at eight criteria, the most important being, he said, what’s best for the children. Other criteria the committee considered were geographic proximity, school capacities, enrollment projections, zone build-out, drawing lines at major thoroughfares, transportation and community input.
After five meetings and the public forum Dec. 17, the committee is to meet one more time then present recommendations to the Board of Trustees at its Jan. 12 meeting.
Based on the re-alignment criteria and when new schools are to be built, the committee proposed elementary school rezoning changes that affect only students zoned to Tomball Elementary School.
The zone used to include a portion of the district east of FM 2978; however, district residents east of FM 2978 will now attend Creekside Forest Elementary School for kindergarten through sixth grade, according to district recommendations. The zones for Lakewood, Willow Creek, Canyon Pointe, Rosehill and Decker Prairie Elementary Schools will remain the same.
Intermediate school zone changes affect each school. All students east of FM 2978 will attend Creekside Forest in The Woodlands rather than Tomball Intermediate. All students who were zoned to Beckendorf Intermediate will now attend Tomball Intermediate.
Some students who were zoned to Northpointe Intermediate will now attend Tomball Intermediate. The Northpointe Intermediate School zone now includes only the neighborhoods zoned to Canyon Pointe, Willow Creek and Lakewood elementary schools. The zone is bound by district boundaries at the south and east sides, Boudreaux Road to the north and Shaw Road to the west.
Rezoning will have to be addressed again when the second K-6 school opens along Kuykendahl in The Woodlands and Tomball Memorial High School opens, both in August 2011.
Schuelke said the committee did not receive as much public input as he would have liked. To submit comments or suggestions about zoning, e-mail Schuelke at DavidSchuelke@tomballisd.net.
