Houston Dessert Club bonds over pastries
By KEVIN KOLOIAN
Once or twice a month a unique group in Spring meets with the sole purpose of eating.
The Houston Dessert Club has 15 to 20 active members, with about five to seven people at a time attending meetings at local pastry shops, which consists of everyone buying a few dessert dishes and sharing them among the group.
“We try to get a bite of everything,” said Gretchen Almoughraby, founder. “My trouble is that I get full really fast and can’t try everything. Usually just a few of us buy most of the food because when people come late there is so much leftover for them because everyone is full.”
The Houston Dessert Club alternates meetings in Spring and ventures further into Houston to let their taste buds go wild.
Le Petit Paris near the Galleria has a been a favorite meetup spot.
Those who prefer staying close to home like meeting at Drew’s Bakery on Louetta Boulevard.
The site of the group’s next discerning taste test will be Crave Cupcakes in the Galleria area on Dec. 20.
Started a little more than a year ago, the idea behind the club made perfect sense to its founder, but she wasn’t sure there was enough interest at first.
“I’ve always really liked going to dessert places and I heard about somebody in Los Angeles who started a cupcake group and thought, ‘That’s so neat, I should start up something here just for dessert lovers,’” Almoughraby said.
The therapeutic nature of food is a factor in the club’s popularity, she said.
“I think desserts are good for the soul. It’s one of the things that is pure in life,” Almoughraby said. “It brings out the kid in us. There’s nothing like going to a place and sampling everything in the store. We are kind of like an alliance who gives ourselves permission to do that.”
Just like people’s love for food, interest hasn’t waned in the dessert lovers.
“I don’t think we will run out of places to go to,” Almoughraby said. “The great thing about Houston is that there are so many places to get good pastries and that includes bakeries and restaurants that serve good food because they often have really good desserts.”
