Boys teams head into break with busy slate
By ROBERT AVERY
The high school varsity boys' basketball teams will officially put the opening five weeks of the season in their rear-view mirrors tonight and usher in the holiday break with a full slate of contests today.
Phillips Field House will be full of pre-Christmas action when Memorial entertains Clear Brook at 7 p.m.
Head coach David Bosley’s crew will be the underdogs as they face a Wolverines team that missed playing in the Gold Division of the recent 76th annual CCISD Classic by a basket. A 70-69 loss to Flower Mound High School in overtime was the only thing keeping the Wolverines from joining the elite in the Gold.
Clear Brook’s roster only features a handful of seniors, five to be exact. Three sophomores, two juniors and even a couple of freshmen dot the roster. The height is topped by 6-5 senior Bimo Ghogomu and the 6-2 Dejon John. Aaron Miller, Joseph Amos and Ricky Jackson are 6-1 and under.
Memorial could have faced Clear Brook in the Silver Division of the Creek tourney, but a 63-54 first-round loss to Dickinson prevented that.
The 4-12 Mavs are directed offensively by Willie Waddell and Carl Johnson. Memorial is still looking for some momentum going into district, but they’re one game and one Conroe Tournament away from opening 22-5A play.
In other games tonight, Sam Rayburn travels to Morton Ranch, Pasadena visits Baytown Lee, Dobie hosts Channelview and Deer Park travels to Clear Creek.
Deer Park fell to Galveston Ball Wednesday night, dropping their fourth contest in the last six after the 83-79 loss to the Tors.
The Deer got in a running game with the up-and-down Tors and couldn’t quite catch up. Clint Ray, who has been on fire lately for the Deer co-led the team with 19 points as did Adrian Morales. But Ray drained four 3s as did Tyler Aston, who finished with 15 points. Darian Banks netted 10. Ray and Darian Banks combined for 11 rebounds, while Morales topped the squad in assists with six.
Deer Park has had its troubles with District 24-5A clubs this season. In addition to the Ball defeat, the team has lost twice to Clear Lake. So tonight’s game will be opportunity to exact some revenge, but it won’t be easy. Eight seniors and three juniors dot the roster.
