Baywood Country Club’s ‘last hurrah’ a big success

Described as “the end of an era,” the final days of Baywood Country Club, 5500 Genoa-Red Bluff, were marked with a celebration on Friday, Dec. 19, called the “Last Hurrah.”

Becoming the last of 3,000,000 rounds of golf, the all-day tournament brought out 36 teams in two flights. Play went so swiftly all day, the golfers were amazed they finished so fast.

Prizes were awarded to winners in each flight and special recognition was given to Dennis Temple, longest sustaining member of the organization – a record 54 years.

He was presented a large, unique wooden plaque, depicting a golf course green. An added personal gift was presented to him by Joanne Cade, to the delight of the crowd. Temple was given the bingo/reverse draw ball tumbler, which, according to Joanne, “He had borrowed it so often through the years, I felt he should have it to keep!”

In recognition of Baywood’s presence in and contribution to the Pasadena area since 1967, proclamations were read from area mayors and the Texas governor.

Richard Scott, city of Pasadena community affairs assistant to the mayor, presented the one from Mayor Johnny Isbell; Deer Park Councilman Thane Harrison presented the proclamation from Mayor Wayne Riddle; and State Rep. Ken Legler brought greetings from Gov. Rick Perry.

The rich history of the location is definitely a part of the area development. Way back in December of 1938, Humble Oil purchased 185.49 acres at the corner of Red Bluff and Genoa-Red Bluff and conveyed it to Humble Recreation Club to construct and operate recreational facilities, known as Humble Country Club. In 1967, it became known as Baywood Country Club.

In 1997, two local residents, Mike Cade and Joe Lambertson bought the facility and have operated it ever since.

For 11 years, organizations and private citizens have used Baywood for weddings, anniversaries, graduation and birthday parties. Even a partial list of groups using Baywood as their regular meeting place is lengthy – Pasadena South Rotary, Bay Area A&M Club, Pasadena Bar Association, Republican Women’s Club, Pasadena Sister City, Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournaments, Boy Scouts of America, Pasadena Historical Society and many, many more.

For all of those involved, this will be a significant change.

Demolition will begin sometime after the first of the year. The complex is larger than most people realize, including the clubhouse, restaurant and bar, banquet facilities, kitchen, men’s and ladies’ locker rooms, Olympic-sized swimming pool. Six lighted tennis courts and tennis pro shop, driving range, several storage buildings and two houses.

An auction of equipment, furniture, etc. will be held in mid-January. The acreage will be the home of a large apartment complex in 2009.

Although looking back at a flood of good memories from the past 11 years, the Cades are looking forward to a fresh start in a new restaurant venture. The Pasadena/Deer Park area will seek them out and build strong, new relationships, as in the past.
