The announcement of the District 13-5A first and second teams last week bore few surprises. In what turned out to be one of the toughest districts in Texas, many of the players who had established themselves as top-flight players were duly honored.
Westfield had 10 representatives on the All-District teams in 11 spots. Jacoby Walker was the lone quarterback to make the first team. Walker threw for 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season.
Also making the first team were the the dynamic receiving tandem of Adam Watson and Ja’Mes Logan. The two combined for 86 catches, 1,565 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Perhaps the one thing close to a surprise in the All-District lists was that first-year varsity program Dekaney had five players on the second team.
“I think it’s another launching point,” Wildcats head coach Willie Amendola said. “It’s an opportunity for our kids to recognize the level that they have to get to win.”
The Wildcats did not win a game this season, often getting blown out, but they showed glimpses of being a potentially dangerous team in the future. With everybody returning next season, Dekaney could be a dark horse in 2009.
Amendola said he thinks his team is ready to take a step forward. Halfback Elijah Johnson and receiver Greg Livingston led the way on offense, while linebacker Adrian Bennett led the way on defense.
“The day after our last game, there was a certain acceptance and maturity level,” Amendola said. “They felt a little more like they belonged.”
Despite a disappointing, injury-plagued season, Spring also placed 11 players on the first and second teams. Headlining this group was receiver Dakota Dill, who caught 37 passes on his way to first-team honors despite losing his top two quarterbacks to injuries.
Fresh off of a deep run in the playoffs, Klein Oak was the biggest winner in terms of All-District honors. Halfback Ossam Cook was named the district’s Most Valuable Player, quarterback Andy Wilson was the Offensive Player of the Year and head coach David Smith was named Coach of the Year. Jesse Beauchamp of Klein Collins was named Defensive Player of the Year.
