It’s Christmas time and that usually means people are in the gift-giving spirit. The same is true for the North Shore Rotary Club and Harris County Precinct 2.
Through Precinct2gether, a recreation program for youth and senior citizens, the NS Rotary Club, the Pasadena/Pasadena South Rotary Club, Harris County Community Services department, CH2M Hill, Chick-fil-A and Kroger, 98 bicycles were awarded to students who demonstrated they had perfect attendance throughout the school year.
The bicycles were presented at the Youth Program Holiday Celebration at the Gerald D. Cobb Sixth Grade Campus Dec. 10. The program centered on the theme “Holidays Around the World.” Students from several schools gathered to sing songs and perform skits showing how other countries celebrate Christmas, even countries that do not traditionally celebrate the holiday such as Israel and Muslim countries.
The Cobb students started the program with a rendition of “Joy to the World,” followed by “O Christmas Tree” representing Germany, and a Christmas medley.
Cloverleaf Elementary students sang “O Come, Little Children” representing Scandinavia and performed the Schottische Dance.
The Woodland Acres Elementary and Middle School students sang “Deck the Halls” representing Britain while Sam Houston Elementary students sang “O Hanukkah” representing Israel.
To represent Mexico, Kruse Elementary students from Pasadena sang “The Piñata Song” and Richey Elementary students sang “Ballet Folklorico.” All joined in a rendition of “Around the World at Christmas Time.”
The San Jacinto Pilot Club and the Anchor Club did a skit about bicycle safety to go along with the presentations. The Pilot Club donated 100 helmets to be worn when riding the bicycles.
“It went very well,” said Steven Villano, Harris County Precinct Two superintendent of youth services. “We were pleased with the turnout. Through the generosity of the sponsors each child received an educational game and a meal from Chick-fil-A.”
Villano said the bicycle might be the only gift a lot of the students will receive this Christmas.
“We have a lot of kids living in difficult situations,” he said. “It’s an important part of the year for us. They need an after school environment and take advantage of the activities we provide.”
Villano said the North Shore Rotary was the primary source of the program with smaller support from the Pasadena/Pasadena South Rotary Club, Harris County Community Services department, CH2M Hill, Chick-fil-A and Kroger. Chick-fil-A donated meals for the students while Kroger donated desserts and candy canes.
The North Shore Rotary Club donated $13,000 to the program. Precinct2gether was founded by the former Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner, the late Jim Fonteno.
