Lady Indians prance in victory over Coldspring

Basketball lovers were in heaven last Tuesday as they got to witness an intense rivalry game between the Cleveland Lady Indians and the Coldspring Lady Trojans. These two teams are similar all across the board.
A game between the two teams pitted the girls of Cleveland Coach Shiakiea Carter against the girls of legendary Coldspring Coach James Elmore.
This game had all the ingredients of being an explosive finish. The Lady Indians went into Coldspring and came out with a convincing win, 46-35.
The first half began as expected as it is when two forces collide with each other. The Lady Trojans would score, then the Lady Indians would respond by doing the same. Both teams brought their “A” game through the first half.
The third quarter belonged to the Lady Indians as they began to execute more effectively than the Lady Trojans.
Coach Carter said, “We ran our offense and scored the ball.”
The Lady Indians had the momentum at the end of the third, but in the fourth they were tested by the Lady Trojans to find out how bad they wanted their first district win.
The Lady Trojans switched up their defense into a press that bothered the Lady Indians, who had to surge back in the game after down by six points. But the Lady Indians remained strong.
Coach Carter said, “We never let up.”
This passion and effort carried over as they began to get second chance opportunities as well as get to the foul line to seal the victory.
Coldspring coach Sherray Brooks said after the game, “The pressure man defense hurt us and our shots were not falling all night. We gave Cleveland too many second chance shots.”
The Lady Trojans were definitely bothered by the Lady Indians defense as their main scoring weapons Coco Holmes, Chelsea King and Adrissa Harrison only had 23 points combined. Kendra Barbar led the Lady Trojans with 10 points and three rebounds.
The Lady Indians’ strong performance was led by Carla Woods’ 14 points and seven rebounds, followed by Reniqua Davis’ 10 points and six rebounds.
Coach Carter expressed after the game, “I know we were a little more pumped than usual because of the rivalry. But I am very proud; they started out aggressive and stayed aggressive throughout the game.”
The Lady Indians swaggered continued to the Spring Branch Tournament where they defeated Pasadena Memorial 50-48 and then turned around to beat Kempner, 54-21.
“We are playing good basketball right now. I think we are getting in the groove now,” Coach Carter said. In the following game, the Lady Indians went down to Cy-falls 60-29.
“We looked tired, really fatigued, because of the back-to-back games,” Carter said.
Reniqua Davis led the way with 14 points and eight rebounds while Crystal Harrell added seven rebounds. The Lady Indians ended the tournament on a loss to Memorial 29-26.
Coach Carter expressed after the game, “This game was a defensive game for both teams.”
Brandy Woods had four assists, Davis had 10 rebounds and Tariesha Scott led the way in points with 14 in the loss.
The Lady Indians played Tuesday in district play against Splendora but due to the paper’s press schedule, the results will be in next week’s paper. The Lady Indians will then go against Beaumont Westbrook Friday at home.
