GEORGETOWN – Big players make big plays! Just ask Kerrville Tivy after Saturday afternoon. With the Antlers driving down the field for a possible game winning field goal attempt, it was A.J. Dugat taking the ball away from a Tivy receiver and returning it the other way. Cody Green then booted the game winning field goal with no time remaining as the Dayton Broncos defeated the Antlers 31-28 in a state semi-final contest at Georgetown ISD Stadium.

Dayton (13-1) moves on to the Class 4A Division II State Championship Game for the first time in school history. The Broncos will face Sulphur Springs, who defeated Everman 47-34. The game will be played this Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

An estimated crowd of some 5,000 Bronco fans celebrated with tears and joy after Green's kick went through the uprights. The celebration carried on into Saturday night when Dayton fans greeted the players on their way back home.

Tivy (12-3) took a 28-21 lead on the second to last play of the third quarter as quarterback Colton Palmer scored from five yards out.

The Antlers looked to add some insurance early in the fourth quarter but it was the Bronco defense coming up big to force a Tivy punt.

Taking over at their own 29 yard line with 6:13 left in the contest the Dayton offense then went to work.

Moving down to the Antler 38, the Broncos faced a third-and-17. Green hooked up with Dugat for 12-yards on third down and then on a fourth-and-five the duo connected again, this time for 18 yards to move the ball to the 8. One play later, Green hit Damian Berotte for an 8-yard scoring pass with 1:50 left. Green then booted the PAT to tie the game at 28 apiece.

Tivy then went on the move and that is when Dugat made perhaps the play of the season. Palmer connected with Matt Ayala on a 23-yard pass down to the Bronco 38-yard line when Dugat took the ball out of the hands of Ayala and went the other way for 50-yards before being tackled at the Antlers' 18 with 58 seconds left.

Two runs by Green put the ball at the Tivy 7, where Dayton called its final timeout with four seconds left.

After using a timeout to try and freeze Green, the senior quarterback/kicker then connected on the 24-yard field goal with no time remaining to send the Bronco nation into a frenzy.

The Broncos took a 6-0 lead on their first possession of the game as Dugat scored from six yards out with 7:04 on the opening quarter. The PAT was blocked leaving the score at 6-0.

Tivy came right back in the first quarter as Palmer hit Logan Vick on a 15-yard scoring toss and after the Connor Overby kick was good the Antlers led 7-6.

Punting into a brisk wind midway in the second quarter the Antlers got a break as Brian McBride's punt went straight up in the air and bounced back to give Tivy the ball at the Bronco 1-yard line. Palmer scored two plays later to make it 14-6.

Dayton answered with an eight play, 88-yard drive when Green connected with Payton Ploch from 29-yards out. Berotte then made a shoe string catch on the two-point conversion to tie things up at 14 apiece heading into the locker rooms.

Cameron LaCour then started things off with a bang on the first play of the second half by returning the kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and a 21-14 Bronco lead.

The Antlers then tied the contest up again midway through the third quarter as Palmer hit Johnny Manbiel from 13 yards.

Palmer lead Tivy through the air with 220 yards passing and two scores.

Dugat finished the contest with 64 yards rushing on seven carries while adding eight catches for 86 yards. Green passed for 132 yards while adding 59 on the ground.
