City council members to receive same health benefits as Sugar Land employees

By AUDREY M. MARKS
Updated: 12.17.08
Sugar Land City Council members are now eligible for the same medical benefits offered to city employees.

Previously city council members were allowed to buy into health and dental insurance, but received no contribution from the city.

City council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday that would grant them coverage with the city footing part of the bill if they choose to enroll.

The change does not alter the paychecks the mayor and council members will receive.

Last year members of the city council voted to raise their car allowance from $100 to $550.

Language in the city charter allows the city council to determine their own compensation in order to pay for expenses “incurred in the performance of their official duties.”

Additionally, members receive a $600 stipend a month with the mayor receiving $1,200.
