United Way helps with financial stability

Updated: 12.23.08
United Way of Brazoria County’s Financial Stability Partnership will offer a series of educational courses designed to provide hard-working families and individuals the basics of purchasing a home, household budgeting, increasing their savings and setting aside savings. Additional financial stability programs underway also include the distribution of a discount prescription card and early planning for the coordination of free tax preparation sites for individuals qualifying for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

The first Financial Stability Course for 2009 will be held Thursday, January 8 and will continue each Thursday to February 12. Classes will be held at United Way’s office at 1212 N. Velasco, Angleton from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A minimum class size of 8 attendees must exist in order for the course to be confirmed. The course is offered free of charge.

The first two sessions will be targeted to individuals who are interested in purchasing a home. The course will educate individuals on understanding their credit, obtaining a mortgage, shopping for a home, closing procedures and maintaining their home and finances after purchase. By attending the two homebuyer class sessions, participants will meet the certification requirement for possible down payment assistance for first time homebuyers.

The four subsequent sessions will include topics such as the importance of savings and consumer rights; the basics of banking; cooking smart and shopping strategies; and real world examples of ways individuals can become more financially stable. Participants attending all six classes will receive a certificate of completion.

The Homebuyer and Financial Stability courses are an extension of United Way’s additional financial stability programs such the coordination of free tax preparation sites for individuals qualifying for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the promotion of the Family Wize prescription discount cards.

During the upcoming tax preparation time period, EITC sites will be offered beginning January 31st at locations tentatively identified throughout Brazoria County.

For several months, United Way has been distributing The Family Wize prescription drug discount card to help individuals and families who otherwise could not afford to buy the medicine they need. It is estimated the card has helped Brazoria County residents save, on average, 22 percent on prescription purchases. There are no age or income restrictions, no limit on how many times it can be used and no waiting to get a card. To obtain a card, look up participating pharmacies, and prescription prices individuals can go to www.familywize.org.

United Way directly funds 64 health and human service programs that help children and youth achieve their potential, promote financial stability and independence, and improve people’s health.
