Hot new courses offered at Lone Star

Lone Star College-Montgomery is looking to grow new firefighters for Montgomery County starting in January.

The college is starting a fire science technology academy next semester.

“The students will go through two semesters of fire academy that, when they complete it, they can sit down and take the Texas Commission on Fire Protection exam,” said Keith Campbell, LSC-Montgomery fire science technology academy director. “When they complete that they’ll be hirable to any fire department.”

If students go through two additional semesters they will earn an associate’s degree in fire technology.

“Fire departments are looking for better-educated firefighters,” Campbell, who has 34 years of experience, said.

Woodlands resident Chris Keith, 24, will be one of the first students in the new academy. He traces his desire to become a firefighter back to taking tours of The Woodlands Fire Department stations as a child.

“That sort of sparked my interest,” Keith said.

A former Air Force aircrew life support journeyman, Keith has been an emergency medical technician for about six years and has experience as a volunteer firefighter, but now is looking to make it a career.

“It was a blessing,” he said about finding an academy so close to home. “I’m just looking forward to the opportunity.”

LSC-Montgomery is partnering with The Woodlands Fire Department, which is allowing the college to utilize the newly opened The Woodlands Emergency Training Center.

“We think it’s great,” said Rick Windham, TWFD deputy chief of training. “There’s really not another program in the area.”

The semester begins Jan. 12.

“There is a true science to putting out a fire, so there’s a lot of classroom time and hands-on experience,” Campbell said.
