Culinary student qualifies for internship at Disney World

San Jacinto College culinary arts instructor Sean Perrodin watches as Kristyl Lanning prepares a dish in the College’s culinary arts kitchen during a busy lunch rush.

Kristyl Lanning, an exemplary culinary arts student at San Jacinto College North, will soon be off to Disney World, not on vacation, but instead ready for hard work and to continue her education.

Lanning recently qualified to participate in Disney World’s prestigious culinary arts internship program, and will spend the upcoming Spring term in Orlando learning from some of the nation’s top chefs.

Lanning was selected for the internship from hundreds of candidates who participated in a rigorous application process held recently at the University of Houston Main campus.

San Jacinto College culinary arts instructor Sean Perrodin says he was not surprised when he found out Lanning qualified for the internship.

"Kristyl is a self starter, a leader, ambitious, and she has a passion for culinary arts," Perrodin commented. "She also has the determination to be a top performer. When she got the news, she seemed a little nervous, but I encouraged her and pointed out she has nothing to lose, but a whole lot to gain. I am happy for her because this is an opportunity that will inspire her to be better in the culinary industry. Culinary experience at Disney World will also look great on Kristyl’s résumé."

Lanning was not only nervous, she was also overwhelmed when she learned about qualifying for the internship.

"I was shaking and could not speak anything but gibberish for about five minutes," remarked Lanning, who lives in Crosby. "Afterwards I was fearful, fearful to leave my friends and family. However, I know I cannot miss this opportunity. I know this is where I need to be and I am confident that I will be successful."

Lanning plans to resume her studies at San Jacinto College North when she returns from Orlando, and will graduate with an associate degree in culinary arts next December. Upon graduation, she has big plans and ambitions for the future. "My goal after I graduate is to possibly move somewhere known for opportunities for chefs, somewhere like New York City, Las Vegas, San Francisco, or Orlando; or to take on a key position like a full-time cruise line chef," Lanning remarked. "And it seems a big change has found me even before graduation. I want the best possible experiences I can get and nothing less, because I want to go far."

She says San Jacinto College is helping her to fulfill her dreams. "I could not ask for anything more than what I have in the instructors at San Jacinto College," Lanning said. "They allow students to shine and they provide opportunities for students to lead. Before coming to San Jac I was stuck in my shell with very little experience. Instructors like Chef Sean had confidence in me, and I now have pride and confidence in what I do."

Lanning had planned to attend a culinary academy in Austin, but says she’s glad she chose San Jacinto College.

"I see now that I would not have gotten the one-on-one experience with skilled instructors that I have received here," she commented. "Every day I advance more, I am pushed to excel and I know I could not get a better learning experience than what I have here at San Jacinto College."

San Jacinto College offers a wide range of one- and two-year course options in culinary arts at the North campus, located at 5800 Uvalde Road in the North Channel area, and at the Central campus, located at 8060 Spencer Hwy., in Pasadena.

Registration for the Spring semester is currently under way online and on campus. For more information about San Jacinto College, please call 281-998-6150, or visit
