Lady Longhorns’ bad shooting costs them game

The Lady Longhorns had to pull out all their shooting weapons for their first district game against Liberty last Tuesday.
From the start of the tip-off, the Lady Longhorns came out firing away offensively from outside. Liberty matched the Lady Longhorns with their aggressiveness, going to the basket and getting into the lane. As both teams offensively went back and forth, Liberty edged out Tarkington with a score of 47-40.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well. We are a team that lives and dies by the three-pointer because of how well our guards shoot, so when we are not hitting, it is very difficult for us to win,” Coach Dawn Angerstein said.
The Lady Longhorn guards Charity Consemiu and Courtney Suggs led the way in the loss with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. With all the shots coming from outside, Dani Benton was scoreless in the first half and made her 11 points in the second half to keep the Lady Longhorns close.
“We pressed them in the third and pulled within four points,” Coach Angerstein said.
As the game continued, the little things became a factor.
“We didn’t do a good job containing their penetration and their offensive rebounding really hurt us,” Angerstein said at the end of the game.
The Lady Longhorns had to put the loss behind them going into the Fairfield Tournament where they competed with great effort. The Lady Longhorns played Tuesday at Huffman and will play in Shepherd on Friday. The results of these games will be in next week’s paper.
