The Drum Major Award, an honor given annually to outstanding individuals nationwide, will be bestowed in connection with the 21-annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration hosted by St. Paul Church in The Woodlands.
The award will be presented during ceremonies on Monday, from noon to 1 p.m., Jan. 19, 2009, as part of the national observance of the commemoration held at The Woodlands United Methodist Church.
The title of the award is derived from a sermon given by Dr. King in February 1968, in which he referred to a 20th century notion of greatness — the innate human need for recognition, the desire for distinction — calling this impulse the Drum Major instinct. In the sermon, the human rights leader referred to the Gospel of St. Mark in which Jesus presents a new norm for greatness, saying, “recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.”
King continues, “By that definition, everybody can be great. Because everybody can serve … you only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love. And you can be that servant.”
Acknowledging the risk involved in pursuing his commitment to liberty, justice and peace, the work for which he gave his life, Dr. King said, “If you want to say that I was a Drum Major, say that I was a Drum Major for justice; say that I was a Drum Major for peace; I was a Drum Major for righteousness.”
The Drum Major Award to be presented will recognize a woman, man, business, or organization in Montgomery County whose life or work best exemplify the ideals of being a “Drum Major.”
Nominations are being accepted through Jan. 9, 2009. Send all nominations to St. Paul Church, 5401 Shadowbend Place or call Irons at 281-367-9366.
