Spring High alumni game to raise money for renovations

Old Spring High School baseball players are getting together to hit a few pitches, relive glorious games and support Lions baseball.

Coach Doug Rush said the Spring Lions Alumni Game should be exciting, with guys who currently play college ball and former college players participating.

Unfortunately, the most famous Spring baseball player, Josh Beckett, won’t be there, but his old high school catcher, Stephen Guzman, an ex-AAA player, will be.

The game and dinner will be on Saturday, Dec. 6, and will benefit something that is dear to everyone’s hearts - the school’s baseball program.

“We are always in need of funds for improvements,” Rush said.

All the money raised will be spent on fencing for the batting cage area and other field improvements.

Those with odd graduation years will be pitted against the ones from even years. Rush said he is hoping enough players show up for two games, with one specifically being for “old-timers.”

The baseball program’s history is full of great accomplishments. The Lions won the state championship in 1979, went to state championships in 2004 and rarely miss the playoffs.

“When anybody in the state of Texas hears Spring High School mentioned they think of its baseball team,” Rush said. “It’s a tradition-rich program.”

This is Rush’s fourth year at Spring High School and he said he hopes players get back together and reminisce every year.

“A lot of people have developed a strong bond over the years, so we are trying to get everybody together, kind of like a reunion,” Rush said.

After the dinner they will hold an auction and collect nonperishable food items and toys that will be donated to Spring Assistance Ministries.
