Baytown PD to take part in charity basketball tournament

Some of Baytown’s finest will be taking it to the basketball courts this weekend in support of children’s charity.

Officers from the Baytown Police Department (BPD) will be facing off against three other area jurisdictions as part of a program benefitting Houston’s Toys 4 Tots foundation Sunday, December 7.

The charity event has been held intermittently for the past 16 years. This year BPD officers have been training at their own basketball court and workout facility, which was built three years ago in a joint effort with Baytown City Council.

This year the BPD will be facing off against the Pearland Police Department, Pearland Fire Department and the Alvin Police Department.

Spectators are asked to bring one new, unopened toy to the event Sunday as part of the donation to Toys 4 Tots, though drop off donations will also be accepted at the BPD office, 3200 North Main.

BPD Detective Shawn Fischer said that the program has already been a resounding success, thanks in part to the participation of HotPursuit.com, a neighborhood crime watch forum representing the city of Baytown.

“Citizens are already bringing toys to us to where we are having to empty our donation boxes pretty much every day,” he said. “Bring a toy the day of the tournament and you can watch and make fun of all of us.”

The tournament will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 at the gymnasium at Pearland High School’s North Campus, 3775 South Main.

For more information on how you can support the BPD and Toys 4 Tots, contact Shawn Fischer at 281-420-7181.
