When looking out the windows of the new library, a forested landscape will welcome readers and guests as they escape in the world of literature.

The new library is set to be much larger and accessible to residents as it will be located on a 9.12-acre tract of land on Bens Branch Drive, off of West Lake Houston Parkway.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Dec. 13 and several area leaders including City of Houston Mayor Bill White, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jerry Eversole, Humble Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Guy Sconzo and City of Houston Councilmember Mike Sullivan will be on hand to celebrate.

“I am very excited about the new library. The city of Houston and Harris County have been approved to continue with construction as scheduled,” Sullivan said.

The Houston City Council approved an interlocal agreement with Harris County Nov. 19 which authorized that city’s construction of the building and Harris County’s operation of the location.

Once the building is complete and functional, the Harris County Public Library System will operate the library.

The design for the building will leave 70 percent of the site as a forested green space to match the surrounding areas and will consist of two floors and 30,000 square feet.

The schematic plans for the new library location illustrate large windows overlooking the green space and spacious rooms to accommodate library patrons.

The plans call for a ribbon cutting ceremony in December 2009.

“We are all very excited about the new Kingwood library. There will be a variety of new opportunities to grow out of the new location and more room to expand services offered,” Sullivan said.

The current Kingwood library will be transformed into a community center for special events and other celebrations in the community.
