Veterans Group sends care packages to troops overseas

In the midst of community-wide toy and food drives for families during the holiday season, a local veterans group is seeking the same generosity.

Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Veterans Group is asking the community to donate items for care packages.

“Our purpose is to show support from the community to the men and women who are currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Sean Stout, group secretary.

The deadline for donated items is Dec. 4, but the group will still take donations until Dec. 7. Needed items are baby wipes; batteries; magazines (no pornography); personal hygiene products such as deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes; non perishable snacks like chips, popcorn, Ramen soup; used playing cards, board games and books; baby powder; and flea collars.

“This is our first time to reach out and ask the community to help us send care packages to our troops overseas,” Stout said. “I know personally how important it is to know how much the community supports the troops.”

Stout spent a little less than a year in Afghanistan. During that time, he received many care packages full of the items that were mentioned.

“To know that someone took time out of their day to mail care packages meant the world to me,” Stout said. “It was just outstanding.”

All donations can be dropped off at the Lone Star College-Kingwood SFA Building, Randalls at 600 Kingwood Drive; Gold’s Gym in Kingwood and at the U.S. Army and Marine recruiting stations in Humble.

Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Veterans Group officially started in fall 2008. Already, the group hosted its own Veterans Day event and planted 4,796 flags in remembrance of those who fought and died in the Global War on Terrorism. Its goal is to get more involved in the community and to get many veterans on campus to join the organization.
